This contains one of the most comprehensive lists of sites for all areas of U.S. (and world) history, and has a good section on the American West.

National Union Catalog for Manuscript Collections (NUMC) Home Page http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html
This online version of the above allows users to search for manuscript material located throughout the U.S. Users enter a subject or keyword, and NUCMC returns a list of relevant collections and their locations.

State Archives and Historical Societies http://www.ohiohistory.org/textonly/links/arch_hs.html
This site provides links to almost all state archives and historical societies in the U.S.

Congressional Collections at Archival Repositories http://www.archives.gov/legislative/repository-collections/
While the National Archives holds three collections of many members of Congress, other collections are scattered throughout the US. The Univ. of Delaware has compiled a list of congressional collections at other archives.

The Special Collections division of the Library of Congress may be searched in various ways. There are descriptions of collections, and many offer digitized samples of their contents.

This is a crucial archive that covers a huge range of topics in U.S. history. You will find some primary sources at this site that have been digitized.

Presidential Libraries http://www.archives.gov/presidential-libraries/
At this site NARA provides contact information and web links to all of the U.S. presidential libraries, along with an overview of the presidential library system.

Historical Text Archive http://historicaltextarchive.com/index.php
This site contains a wide range of primary sources and web links in a variety of historical fields. Under “USA, see a special category entitled “USA West.”

Chicago Historical Society http://www.chicagohs.org/
Has a significant collection of digitized documents in U.S. history as well as guides to many archives.

Makings of America Project at the University of Michigan

This site focuses on 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles in C19th American history. It appears to contain at least some full text of articles and primary documents.

Essentially an online annotated bibliography of sites relevant to the study of the American West with most resource links related to ethnicity and race in the West.

A very important site that provides guides to primary sources and collections in most major California libraries. It sometimes contains detailed guides and descriptions of collections and may contains some digitized primary materials.

An important site to explore. The medium by which many California historians communicate. This site also has good links to other web sources.

An important organization based at U.C. Berkeley that puts on conferences and seminars in California history. See the links at this web site.

The Bancroft Library http://bancroft.berkeley.edu/index.html
One of the major archives in California and western history.

The California Historical Society http://www.californiahistoricalsociety.org/
Features California History Online, an online guide to over 300 years of California history. The California Cultural Directory provides links to county local historical archives and societies, including Santa Clara County.

California State Library, Sacramento http://www.library.ca.gov/
The State Library collects historic materials on California and the West. A good starting place for access to catalogs and other research tools.

Provides a repository for the state's permanent governmental records as well as other materials documenting California history.

It contains manuscript collections and other useful resources. Well worth checking out if your topic is in San Francisco history or related.

Museum of the City of San Francisco http://www.sfmuseum.org/
The Museum traces San Francisco history from its origins as a Spanish garrison, to renown as a Gold-Rush boom town – to world attention as the famous Earthquake City.

Provides online access to San Francisco City and County records for many types of records, including census and immigration records.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library Special Research Collections http://www.sjlibrary.org/research/special/
Describes collections of the King Library. California Room, San Jose State University Special Collections, Steinbeck Center, and Cultural Heritage Center are worth checking out for local history.

Local archive with good resources. Collections are not fully processed, but still very well worth making an appointment to see the archivist.
