Faculty Writing Workshops
Faculty Writing Workshops
Dr. Linda C. Mitchell, Director of the SJSU Writing Center, and Michelle Hager, Associate
Director of the Writing Center, developed a writing workshop to be presented to select
members of the SJSU faculty. The goal of the AANAPISI Faculty Writing Workshop is
to improve the quality of writing instruction across the campus. Upon completion of
the workshop, the faculty will be able to use teaching techniques that are immediately
transferrable to their classrooms. The faculty members who are selected to participate
in the workshop attend a full day of instruction about the teaching of writing, and
they create their own practical lesson plans that can be used in the classroom. On day two, they present these lessons, during
which time they receive feedback from the workshop facilitators and their peers. The
complete lessons will be refined and posted online for other instructors to use in
their classes.
On January 20, we conducted our first workshop session for nine faculty members. The
selected faculty members were from the Departments of English, Linguistics and Language
Development, Secondary Education, Educational Leadership, and Meteorology and Climate
Science. The eight participants were split into two cohorts: one cohort presented
lessons on February
10, and the other cohort presented on March 2. We have been administering surveys
for assessment to the faculty participants, and we have received overwhelmingly positive
feedback about the high quality of the workshop with multiple instructors stating
that the workshop was so powerful that it changed their instructional techniques.
Our next round of Faculty Writing Workshops will be held in January, 2013. Download the flier below for more information and for application instructions regarding this workshop.
