There are many resources on campus to help you be successful at SJSU.
Degree Progress Report Information (from the Schedule of Classes)The Degree Progress Report allows students, advisors, and evaluators to determine what requirements a student has satisfied and what requirements are still needed. The progress report matches academic requirements (university, GE and major) against a student’s individual academic record. Official verification of completion of your degree requirements will be processed by the Graduation Evaluators.
As previously mentioned, transfer credit is posted on your Degree Progress Report about two semesters after you begin coursework at SJSU. See the below information about how to find out the requirements you still need before your transfer credit is posted on your Degree Progress Report.
Core GE and Physical Education
Students are required to take Core GE courses and two Kinesiology activity courses. These three sections of the University Requirements may, in many cases, be transferred into SJSU from another college or university. See the sections for California community college students, students from another CSU and students from other universities below for more information.
American Institutions
The American Institutions requirement, or Area F, may be satisfied by taking articulated coursework from a California community college or certain other California universities. Information about which courses meet the American Institutions requirement (Area F) at California community colleges can also be found at the Articulation GE Breadth webpage.
SJSU Studies
All students must complete SJSU Studies (formerly known as Upper Division GE) at SJSU. Coursework from other institutions will not be accepted to fulfill this requirement.
California Community College Students
Many transfer students from CA Community Colleges have satisfied lower division general education (Core GE) courses at their home college. This may have been accomplished through a CSU GE-Breadth agreement, or the IGETC agreement. If a student has full certification through either the CSU GE-Breadth or IGETC, he/she has completed the requirements for the Core GE coursework. Students should consult with their Community College Counselor to plan coursework to complete these certifications.
If a student has not fully completed either of the certification requirements, he or she can find out which GE requirements he/she still needs to take at the Transfer Information Program. If the student still has questions after TIP, then he or she will need to make an appointment to see a GE Advisor at Academic Advising & Retention Services to figure out which requirements must still be met AFTER the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester (first three weeks). Students may also view the Articulation GE Breadth webpage for information about how their transferred classes will satisfy their GE requirements. Information about which courses meet the American Institutions requirement (Area F) can also be found at this webpage. Many students take major classes their first semester until they find out which other requirements must still be met.
Students from Another CSU
The SJSU Articulation GE Breadth webpage lists GE Breadth Patterns for several of the other California State Universities. Students can find out which GE requirements they still need to take at the Transfer Information Program. If the student still has questions after TIP, then he or she will need to make an appointment to see a GE Advisor at Academic Advising & Retention Services to figure out which requirements must still be met AFTER the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester (first three weeks). Many students take major classes their first semester until they find out which other requirements must still be met.
Students from UCs, Out of State Colleges and Universities and International Students
As there is little to no articulation available for institutions from out of state, out of the country and the University of CA, students can find out which GE requirements they still need to take at the Transfer Information Program. If the student still has questions after TIP, then he or she will need to make an appointment to see a GE Advisor at Academic Advising & Retention Services to figure out which requirements must still be met AFTER the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester (first three weeks). Many students take major classes their first semester until they find out which other requirements must still be met.
Transfer students should apply for graduation when they have completed 90 semester units. For some students this can be as early as their first or second semester at SJSU. Students will receive a message on their mySJSU account once they have completed 90 units, reminding them to apply for graduation. In general, a student will need to apply for graduation a year before they plan to graduate.
