Telephone Dialing

New Telephone Dialing Procedures

Beginning October 20, 2012 you must dial an area code plus telephone number when placing an outside call from a landline phone on campus.

A new area code, 669, is being added and will cover the same geographic region as the existing 408 area code. The overlay provides an ongoing supply of telephone numbers for the region which includes most of Santa Clara County and portions of Alameda and Santa Cruz counties. Your existing area code and telephone number will not change, but it will be necessary to change the way you make off-campus calls.

In addition, automatic dialing or programmed equipment with a 7-digit number will need to be reprogrammed to include the area code. This equipment includes fax machines, alarm and security systems, speed dials and call forwarding settings. You may change the programming now as the grace period began April 12, 2012.

Things to remember:

Your current campus telephone number will not change.
You can still use abbreviated dialing on campus.
911 remains a three digit call.

If you have questions about the impact of the area code overlay on SJSU, please contact Don Baker at 408 924-7820.
