Student Union Building, Phase One
We are pleased to announce that phase one of the Student Union Expansion and Renovation project has been completed and is open for business. Phase one includes the expansion on the east and west end of the original building. Phase two will be the renovation of the original building and will begin after operations are relocated into the new building. The bookstore has moved into the new location and other departments will follow soon.
Drinking Water on Campus
This spring, FD&O, the University Sustainability Board, and the students in Professor Katherine Cushing's Water Resources Management course (ES 128), collaborated on a tap water and water fountain evaluation project.
Working with FD&O, students conducted water quality monitoring at several drinking fountains. They also evaluated conditions for 148 water fountains, surveyed over 250 students and staff on tap water perceptions and use, and investigated options for water bottle refill stations.
The study results have helped FD&O prioritize water fountain maintenance issues and have identified future opportunities for campus education. The information gathered on bottle refill stations will be used to inform program development for future water fountain upgrades on campus. Water bottle refill stations are now the standard for new buildings and will also be retrofitted on a number of locations campus-wide. Instead of buying bottled water, students, faculty and staff are welcome to utilize these stations. They also provide a more sustainable water provisioning practice.
Campus Village 2 - New Dormitories
Construction is scheduled to begin on the new dormitories this June and will continue for the next two years. This project will provide 850 new beds for our freshman.
Campus Energy Challenge
The Campus Energy Challenge will take place this fall. The goal is to increase awareness about sustainability measures that we all can utilize. We can reduce energy through the combined actions of individual students, faculty and staff. We hope to achieve energy savings during the semester, as well as instill permanent behavioral changes to promote energy efficiency.
Each college will have one of their buildings monitored for electricity usage. Usage will be compared against the fall 2013 semester and and recognition awards will be given.
Energy Saving Tips
- Turn off lights in rooms after class, at the end of the day
- Use natural lighting when appropriate
- Dress appropriately for the weather
- Skip the elevator and take the stairs
- Remove space heaters and mini-refrigerators from offices and cubicles.
- Turn off monitors, computers and printers at the end of the day and on weekends
- Set computers to go into standby mode after 10 minutes and disable screensavers
- Close windows and doors to save on cooling and heating
- Turn off laboratory vent hoods when not in use and keep fume hood sashes at indicated height and closed when not in use
- Unplug equipment not in use or use a surge protector to turn off several plugs at once
