Open Enrollment

The annual Benefits Open Enrollment period for SJSU employees is September 14 through October 9, 2015. All changes made during Open Enrollment will be effective January 1, 2016.

Open Enrollment is the annual opportunity to make changes to your benefits plan. During this period, you may enroll in, or change, a health or dental plan, add or delete dependents, enroll or cancel FlexCash and enroll in a Flexible Spending Account (HCRA/DCRA).

Please note that if you currently participate in either HCRA or DCRA and wish to continue for tax year 2016, you must re-enroll during Open Enrollment.

The Employee Services Fair (PDF) is your opportunity to learn about the numerous benefits programs available to you, and meet the vendors who provide them. Your HR benefits representatives will be on hand to answer questions. Many vendors will be there offering discounts and perks to SJSU employees. Bring your Tower ID cards for giveaways and prizes. See you at the fair!

New CSU Background Check Policy for All Employees

The CSU recently rolled out its systemwide background check policy (PDF) for all employees. The policy is summarized below:

  • Required background checks for all new employees, including faculty, include: 10-year employment check, education verification, reference checks, criminal records checks
  • Additional background checks will be done for specified sensitive positions or where the check is required by law: credit report history check, motor vehicle records/licensing check, state/national sexual offender registry check, professional licensing/certification/credential verification
  • Current employees may be background checked if moving to another position voluntarily, if that position requires additional checks (e.g. a financial position requiring a credit check)
  • Student employees may be background checked if the work they will be doing is considered sensitive or is required by law
  • Auxiliary employees must be background checked, and this process should be coordinated by the auxiliaries
  • Offers of employment can only be made after the criminal records check is completed, with few exceptions
  • Work may not begin before all background checks are complete, with few exceptions
  • The President or his designee may authorize new faculty members to begin work before the background check is complete only if the university will be adversely affected because it would not be able to offer a class
  • Human Resources will coordinate the process for staff and management recruitments; Faculty Affairs will coordinate the process for faculty recruitments

What does this mean to you? It means getting a new employee on board may take a bit longer.  It means our employees will be more thoroughly vetted and the risk to the university reduced.

Payroll Representatives

Payroll Changes

In our ongoing efforts to review and improve our services to the campus community, the payroll representatives have rotated their payroll rosters effective July 1, 2015.  Each representative has been assigned to new colleges and departments and has gone out to meet their new payroll contacts.  This will give them the opportunity to meet new customers and cross train with one another with their new assigned areas.  The reps are excited about the changes and are looking forward to working with their new customers!
