Employee Services Fair

The 2016 Employee Services Fair will be held on Thursday, September 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. This is your opportunity to learn about the benefits programs available to you and meet the vendors who provide them. Your HR benefits representatives will be on hand to answer questions. Many other vendors will be there offering discounts and perks to SJSU employees. Bring your Tower ID card for giveaways and prizes. See you at the fair!

Open Enrollment 2016

Open Enrollment 2016 begins September 12, and ends October 7. Changes made during Open Enrollment take effect January 1, 2017.

During Open Enrollment, you can:

  • Add dependents to your health coverage
  • Change your CalPERS health plan
  • Delete dependents from your health coverage
  • Discontinue your existing CalPERS health coverage
  • Enroll in a CalPERS health plan if you do not currently have CalPERS health coverage
  • Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA) and/or the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account (DCRA) – you can enroll, cancel or change during this period

Save the Date - Spartan Service Celebration!

The 49th Annual Spartan Service Celebration will be held on Thursday, November 3, at 3:00 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. The program will be followed by a celebratory reception. The university will honor staff with 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years of service. Join us as we recognize over two thousand years of staff service to SJSU!

Stretch Breaks & Ergonomic Evaluations

Earlier this year Human Resources released the Stretch Break software. HR is happy to announce that Stretch Break software is now available for both Mac and PC! Ergonomic Evaluations

Ergonomic evaluations and training are designed to analyze and evaluate an employee’s workspace, equipment, body mechanics, posture, and workflow to promote a more efficient and productive workspace. This can be very helpful in preventing discomfort and injury associated with repetitive motions, unchanging and/or poor posture and forceful motions or grips on objects.

Before requesting an ergonomic evaluation, employees should review the Ergonomics webpage and complete the US Department of Labor-Computer Workstation eTool Evaluation.  We also recommend completing the CSU Computer Workstation Ergonomics training course that is available online via the SJSU Skillport Portal 

In order to improve the ergonomic evaluation request process, HR has created an online Ergonomic Evaluation Request Form. All requests for ergonomic evaluations must be submitted using this new online form. Upon receipt of this request, the Ergonomic Program Analyst will contact the requestor via email to schedule an evaluation within three (3) business days.

Once the ergonomic evaluation has been completed, a report will be provided to the employee and his/her appropriate administrator. The report will identify key workstation adjustments and provide recommendations, for any related ergonomic equipment items. 

There is no fee for an ergonomic evaluation; however, the employee’s appropriate administrator must approve the purchase of any ergonomic related equipment. Purchases are made from the department’s budget.

Fair Labor Standards Act
Federal Fair Labor Standards Act Changes 

Changes are coming to the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) later this year. Our staff has been working closely with the Chancellor’s Office as they determine how to implement those changes for all 23 CSU campuses. The primary change is the salary threshold that makes an Executive, Administrative or Professional worker exempt or not exempt from overtime compensation. Currently, the threshold for these workers to be exempt is $23,660/year. This figure will increase to $47,476/year.

SJSU MPP employees fall into the Executive and Administrative category. Classifications in Units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 9, as well as some of our confidential classifications, fall into the Professional category. There are some exemptions in the law regarding teaching faculty but other members of Unit 3 may not be exempted.

So, what does that mean to you? The CSU has not yet determined the complete answer to that question. We will wait for system wide direction and communicate to managers as appropriate. Systemwide HR Solution
Consolidated Human Resources Systems

Consolidated Human Resources Systems (CHRS) is the CSU’s systemwide technical solution for Human Resources. Much like the Common Financial System (CFS) project consolidated all PeopleSoft Finance systems a few years ago, this project will consolidate all PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) systems.

In preparation for this consolidation, the current PeopleSoft HCM 9.0 system will be upgraded to HCM 9.2 and the HR and Student sides will split into two separate and distinct databases. Functionality will also be delivered to ensure common data moves between the two databases (e.g. Employee/Student IDs, Personal Data, etc.). These processes are on track to begin in mid-2017 with 3 pilot campuses. The remaining campuses will be split into four waves for implementation, and all campuses should be live in the new combined system by the end of 2019. The pilot campuses have not yet been identified, nor has it been determined which campuses will go live when. Those conversations will happen in the next few months.

We have been communicating with campus stakeholders and will expand that communication as the project progresses. The goal of the consolidation project is to standardize HR business processes so it is very likely the way you currently work in PeopleSoft HR will change. We will provide plenty of notice, communication and training once we know specifics on what those changes might be.
