The residential dining hall, servicing 3,000 meal plan holders for almost 50 years, is now going through renovations to bring a modern and updated space for customers. Upgrades include brand new furniture, paint, flooring, lighting, and new biodegradable bamboo dishware. Meal plan customers will be able to enjoy the new facility starting fall 2016.
Starting in the fall, The Commons will be adopting a new sustainability initiative: Green Monday. Green Monday is a social enterprise group that promotes and enables green, healthy, and sustainable living. We will be promoting vegetarian options and sustainability initiatives like waste reduction on Mondays with special menus, information graphics, and informational sessions.
Sea to Table
The Commons and our catering service will be offering fish from Sea to Table, a company that partners with fisherman from small scale, wild, and sustainable fisheries to create a direct connection with the fisherman and the chef.
Along with their new makeover, The Commons will be using new bamboo plates. These plates are eco-friendly, durable, and biodegradable.
A survey was sent out to SJSU students, faculty, and staff to find out what new flavors customers were craving on campus.
One of the top three dining concepts voiced by the community was BBQ, and thus began the hard work to create the newest eatery: Smokin’ Sammy’s. Over the summer, Spartan Shops chefs worked hard to test multiple recipes, perfecting everything from rubs to mac n’ cheese, smoking all meats in-house.
Customers will be able to enjoy tri-tip, pulled pork, brisket, hot links, and traditional sides like cornbread, coleslaw, and more mouthwatering classics. This new menu will be served on sustainable dishware made from fallen leaves.
New Starting Fall! DiNapoli Tomatoes
These vine ripened, freshly packed tomatoes grown in the California Central Valley will now be used in all of our pizza and pasta sauces on campus. Even Jimmy Kimmel is a huge fan of DiNapoli tomatoes!
Our eateries will be back in full swing beginning Monday, August 29, the first full week of the fall semester! Don’t forget to visit our website to see the hours for each eatery.
