San José State has a robust wellness program in Well U with events such as the Staff Olympics, Poker Walk, and Spartan Wellness Challenge to help you get active and stay healthy. Wellness is important to building our Spartan Pride, so we're excited to inform you of some great opportunities coming in 2013 as part of our Well U program.
This year, we have partnered with Kaiser Permanente in its worksite wellness program, Health Works.
Kaiser Permanente's goal for Health Works fits nicely with the goal of Well U, to improve overall employee health and health awareness through engaging participation in wellness activities at work. You may have gotten a taste of Kaiser Permanente's health resources with the online physical activity program, Thrive Across America. The program proved to be a great success for SJSU team members, with 275 employees participating, and clocking a total of 700,732 minutes of activity.
Following are some of Health Works programs to look forward in 2013. These programs are offered to all SJSU benefits eligible employees free of cost and you do not need to be a Kaiser member.
Preventative Screenings - Know Your Numbers Health Screening
It's important to know your health numbers, like blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index and blood glucose, so you can better manage your health.
Kaiser staff will be on campus so you can get your numbers without visiting your doctor or going in for lab work. Screeners will go over your results and, if your numbers are a little high, they will give advice on how to make small lifestyle changes to get you back on track. If any of your numbers are very high, they will ask you to visit your physician for further testing. Knowing your "health numbers" can decrease the risk of major chronic disease and increase your odds for health and longevity. Online Total Health Assessment
To get on a path to better health, you need to know where you're at today. A health assessment gives you a look at your current state of health, then provides a personalized action plan with tips on how to improve your overall well-being. Your screening numbers are helpful to use here, as they will lead to more customized results and recommendations.
Healthy Lifestyle Programs
Health Works offers an array of online healthy lifestyle programs that provide support in helping you reach a variety of health goals including quitting smoking, losing weight, reducing stress, eating healthier, sleeping better, and managing a chronic condition. These online programs make it convenient for you to access support and other resources on your own time.
