No Matter What

We congratulate these No Matter What award winners:

Teams

Finance: Shipping and Receiving
Sal Campos, Tony Diaz, Ray Gonzales, Phil Perez, Jason Skarbeck, Tushar Patel, Tinuloa Omole, Ricardo Miranda

This nomination was submitted by Bonnie King & Becka Paulsen

TheShipping & Receiving Team is being nominated because they have performed in an exemplary manner over a number of years. The Receiving department has increased their accuracy and on-time delivery rates. In 2006 they delivered 67% of packages within 4 hours of receipt. In 2007 that rate was 71%, and as of July 2008 their on-time delivery rate increased to over 82%. 4-hour deliveries have increased 15% in 2 years. In addition, packages delivered within 8 hours of receipt increased from 86% to 90% in 2008, and packages received and delivered within 24 hours of receipt went from 91% in 2006 to 96% in 2008. These percentages show a 10% increase in 24 hour delivery rates. Also, they are committed to excellent customer service and willingly help departments return packages, trace shipments, locate missing packages as well as pack and ship merchandise off campus. Thank you!

University Computing and Telecommunications: Network Services - MacQuarrie Hall Project
Rong Wang, Tam Vu, Steve Chang, Dennis Fox, Nick Cappelloni, Stephanie Arthur, Sasha Wallace, Robert Lopez

This nomination was submitted by: Susan Kintana

The Network Services Team successfully moved half of the campus network infrastructure to the MacQuarrie Hall Hub. This was done during business hours, but created no down time for the campus network. Their success is attributed to five years of planning and construction with countless hours spent developing and testing the architecture to make sure the move could be executed flawlessly. This involved numerous weekends of prep work involving nearly $5 million worth of equipment. The end result is that the campus has a fully redundant network, both physically and logically. In the event of outage to either MacQuarrie Hall or the Data Center, the network will continue to function without a problem. The Network Service team was able to make this happen while maintaining, protecting and supporting the existing network, which requires constant support adjustments and changes. Their success was measured by not causing any network interruptions to the campus infrastructure. Congratulations!

Moment of Magic

We congratulate these Moment of Magic award winners:

Juan Leon and Ernesto Rodriguez, Facilities Development and Operations
This nomination was submitted by: Terri Ramirez

I would like to nominate Juan Leon and Ernesto Rodriguez for a Moment of Magic Award because they did not hesitate to get involved to help a student in need. Juan and his co-worker Roberto were clearing the cardboard from the Duncan Hall dock. Ernie from the Carpenter Shop stopped by just as Roberto drove off with the forklift to go empty the bin. Juan and Ernie saw a young small Asian student chasing an older Caucasian man wearing a backpack too small for him and the student saw them and yelled, "Help - he's stealing from me! That's my backpack!" Ernie called UPD while Juan ran over to the guy and told him to stop. The guy told Juan to get out of his way and that it was his backpack and he was late for work. The student grabbed onto the backpack and the guy tried to shake him off and keep going, so Juan grabbed the backpack too and told the man who was trying to steal it he had to stay there. Then UPD drove up with lights flashing. Once UPD arrived, Juan left without giving his name. This student was greatly helped by Juan's and Ernie's actions. If his backpack had been stolen, that would have created a hardship for this student and been detrimental to his academic success. Thank you Juan and Leon!

Fetulima (Star) Nuuvali, Facilities Development and Operations
This nomination was submitted by: Terri Ramirez

I want to nominate Star for a Moment of Magic Award because he was at the right place to help a fellow employee. On 2/11/09 around 8:00 a.m. or so, an employee from the Receiving department was over by Duncan Hall and a stranger started beating him. Luckily, Star drove up to dump stuff off in the bin by MacQuarrie Hall and he saw what was going on and walked over there, yelling at the guy who was hitting the employee to stop. The stranger ran away when he saw Star coming. Star was in the right place to stop this attack on a fellow employee, and did not hesitate to get involved. I was told the employee needed stitches in a couple of areas. If the mugger hadn't been stopped by Star from hitting the employee, who knows how badly he may have been hurt. Thank you, Star, for intervening.

Liza Rios, University Police Department
This nomination was submitted by: Claire Kotowski

Liza is a viable nominee for the Moment of Magic Award because of her willingness to step up and help out with Department projects wherever and whenever needed. For last year's Holiday Toy Program there was a big hole in our committee structure. We needed someone to take on the Family Registrations. This sounds simplistic, but it is extremely complicated and time consuming. She has worked with Parking Services who collected the applications at the service window and the Counseling Staff of Lowell Elementary School to put together a viable list so when Jenny Pak and Manuel Aguayo performed the knock and notice - the houses that are scheduled to be delivered toys and food are actually the right families. She has worked with Letty Coronado to make sure that the people on the pick-up lists get the right reference information such as children's ages and if they are boys or girls. Thank you Liza!

Facilities Development and Operations: Partners in Reading
Phal Sek, Sonia Baltodano, Christine Smythe

This nomination was submitted by: Betty Luna

I received a telephone call inviting me to International Literacy Day Celebration at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. I hesitated and the person on the other end continued, "Sonia Baltodano gave us your name as a person that might be interested in attending." As soon as I heard Sonia's name, I listened more intently. I went to the celebration. Not only was Sonia Baltodano there, but so was Phal Sek and Christine Smythe. All three of these individuals are dedicated to life-long learning and have spent numerous hours on their own time to achieve a greater level of literacy and writing skills. They each plan on continuing in the Adult Literacy Program at King Library and have set their goals to higher education, as well. These are three individuals that have taken life's challenges and turned them into blessings. I would like the University community to recognize their motivation to be more and would offer that all of us can be more. I believe that these individuals went above and beyond, took initiative and demonstrated the core value of continuous learning. Here is to years of reading and writing enjoyment. Congratulations!

Michael Peth, Finance
This nomination was submitted by: Alex Lebedeff

I would like to nominate Michael Peth for a Moment of Magic Award. At the end of 2007, a selection committee was formed and the Campus Imaging Project began. One of the main challenges was to make the user interface as simple as possible, yet have the necessary complexity behind the scenes to meet the University's goals for this project. Michael ensured vendor compliance on this important measure. Michael assumed the lead role of project manager, and shared his extensive personal knowledge with the selection committee. He went above and beyond to identify departments' specific needs including: extra security measures for HR and UPD, transcript clarity for EAS, scanning, storing and retrieving POs, Invoices, and GLs for Finance. He advised the group to start slow and grow the system to allow for moderate cultural change so users could adapt the technology in their daily duties. Michael invested his time working with campus senior IT staff to examine our network infrastructure and ensure it was ready. He went beyond his buying duties and demonstrated competent systems knowledge, used good judgment and strong interpersonal communication skills to achieve the desired results. Thank you Michael for your above and beyond spirit!

Tim Villarica, University Police Department
This nomination was submitted by: Claire Kotowski

Tim was commended in writing by the Vice President of Recovery Services of Absolute Software. Here are comments from his letter. "I am writing to thank you for the prompt and efficient service we recently received from your Department. As a retired Police Officer, I know that the quality and timeliness of leads regarding crimes committed can make all the difference in an investigation. Our company is the developer of Computrace Lojack for Laptops - a computer theft recovery software. A computer belonging to one of our customers was stolen in San Jose, CA. On June 17, 2008, it contacted our monitoring center over the Internet. Our software identified an IP address and user in San Jose. Officer Tim Villarica successfully concluded the case when he recovered the computer on September 1, 2008. My compliments to Officer Villarica, whose diligence and investigative skills helped put a dent in property crime." Congratulations on your commendation !
