Finding and Submitting Paperwork to Declare or Change Your Major or Minor

From the SJSU Catalog:

Students who wish to change their degree major objectives should obtain a change of major form from the Forms page. The form requires the approval and signature of the chair of the department of their new major. The completed form is returned to the Registrar's Office.

The change of major is not official until the completed form is on file with the Registrar's Office. This form may also be used to move from undeclared to a major; declare a second major, or change a minor. Change of undergraduate major and minor forms are downloadable from the Forms page. Highlights from PD 2009-05 Guideline 3 - Declaring a Major

  • If a student chooses to declare a major that is impacted, the student must apply to the impacted major no later than November 1st in order to register for Spring semester and April 1 for fall term.
  • Students declaring an impacted major must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the impacted major.
  • If the student meets the impaction eligibility criteria, and will not increase the time to graduation by more than 15 units by changing into that major, the student will be allowed to add the major if there is space available.
  • Students who apply to declare a major and are not accepted by that major may only apply twice to that major and only if the units they take between the first and second application do not exceed 12 units.

Highlights from PD 2009-05 Guideline 4 - Changing a Major

  • Effective after the final day of the Fall 2009 semester, students who have earned 90 units or more may not change majors except by special permission.
  • If a student wants to change to a major that is impacted, the student must apply to the impacted major no later than November 1 in order to register for Spring semester (or April 1 for Fall semester).
  • Students changing to an impacted major must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for the impacted major.
  • A departmental or college admissions committee will decide admissions into impacted majors.
  • If either the Associate Dean or AARS denies the application for a change to an approved program, the student may choose to appeal the decision.
