Please read the following information before seeking advice from an Advisor. Click on one of the following situations that best describes you:
- I have been admitted to San José State University as a Frsoh, but have not yet attended classes.
- I am a first time frosh in my first semester who has never seen an Academic Advisor in an appointment at SJSU before.
- I am a first time frosh in my second semester who has never seen an Academic Advisor in an appointment at SJSU before.
- I am a transfer student who has never seen an Academic Advisor in an appointment at SJSU before.
- I am a frosh or sophomore who has seen an Academic Advisor previously at SJSU.
- I am a transfer student or upper division student who has seen an Academic Advisor previously at SJSU.
- I am a graduate student.
Admitted Students
- If you have not yet registered for your mandatory orientation, find more information about frosh orientation by visiting the Frosh Orientation website.
- You will meet with general education advisors and advisors from your major department and/or college at this orientation.
- Write down and bring a list of questions that you would like to ask your advisors.
New First Time Frosh - First Semester
- Write down and bring a list of questions that you would like to ask your advisor at your meeting.
- Know what your student ID number is. If you don't have it memorized, make sure you have your Tower Card with you (it is on the back of your card).
- Come to the Academic Advising & Retention Services in the Students Services Center (SSC) for an advising session regarding General Education.
- Keep track of your General Education, American Institutions and PE requirements using this unofficial GE worksheet. Bring this sheet to your GE advising appointments.
- If you have a question regarding which classes to take for your major, please seek advising from your major department.
New First Time Frosh - Second Semester
- Print out a copy of your Unofficial Transcript from your MySJSU page.
- Write down and bring a list of questions that you would like to ask your advisor at your meeting.
- Know what your student ID number is. If you don't have it memorized, make sure you have your Tower Card with you (it is on the back of your card).
- Come to the Academic Advising & Retention Services in the Students Services Center (SSC) for an advising session regarding General Education.

New Transfer Students
- Make sure to attend the mandatoryTransfer Orientation.

- Check with your major department for any additional preparation you may need prior to your major advising session.
- Bring any transcript(s) from other institution(s) with you to each advising session you attend.
- Print out a copy of your Unofficial Transcript from your MySJSU page.
- Learn how to use the SJSU Articulation website and this unofficial GE worksheet to make sure all your lower division GE, American Institutions and PE requirements were met at your last college/university.
- Write down and bring a list of questions that you would like to ask your advisor at your meeting.

Lower Division Students - Already Seen an Academic Advisor Once
