San José State University Accessibility Standards for Computer Laboratories

(Supersedes information in PD-1998-02)

Standards for accessible workstations outlined below establish a minimum level of compliance for SJSU computer laboratories.

Updates and changes will be made to keep pace with technological advancement.

The intent of accessible workstation(s) is to provide students with disabilities equal access to technology and workspace. Accessible workstation(s) are not required to be stand-alone or dedicated. Students with disabilities must be given priority use of accessible workstation(s); workstations are open to all student when not occupied by a student with a disability.

Lab personnel are responsible for maintaining their lab accessible workstation.

Accessible Path of Travel

An accessible path of travel may consist of walks and sidewalks , curb ramps, an other interior or exterior pedestrian ramps; clear floor paths through lobbies, corridors, rooms, and other improved areas; parking access aisles; elevators and lifts; or a combination of these elements. (2010 ADA Standard for Accessible Design)

Physical Barriers-Minimum Standards For Accessible Workstations:

  • Wheelchair floor space of 30" x 48" for a forward approach
  • Work surface at least 30" from the floor
  • Hands-free, adjustable tables recommended to assist in meeting variable height requirements of various wheelchairs
  • Clearance of 29" beneath the top to a depth of at least 20"
  • 17"-25" minimum toe clearance
  • Minimum width of 36" to allow leg space for seated individuals
  • Utility and equipment controls located within easy reach
  • Clear aisle width sufficient to maneuver a wheelchair, remanded 5' diameter
