CAT Policies & Procedures

 

Eligibility for CAT Use

Eligibility for this service is determined by the AEC Counselors or the AEC Director, and is based in part on the professional documentation provided by the student or employee. To utilize CAT, students must:

  1. Attend orientation.

  2. Check in at the front desk with SJSU ID.

  3. Access computer profile with SJSUOne log-in credentials.

CAT is for the exclusive use of AEC students. No friends or visitors may access CAT. Exceptions to this rule are students who require service providers. No animals will be permitted into the lab except for guide dogs, companion dogs, or service dogs.

Check-in and Check-out

In order to gather and maintain an accurate record of CAT usage, a barcode scanner is stationed at the front desk for AEC students to check-in and check-out. Students must use their Tower Card when checking in or out of CAT. Should students need any assistance, they can speak to a CAT professional staff member.

Orientation

New students are required to go through a 15‐20 minute orientation with CAT staff in order to be allowed access to the CAT lab. Orientation allows the student to learn about the policies and procedures of the CAT, familiarize oneself with resources available, and obtain a username and password necessary for computer log‐in. 

Lab Etiquette

    1. Students must respect others' need for quiet.

    2. Do not leave your belongings in the lab area; if you choose to do so, CAT is not responsible for lost or stolen belongings.

    3. Personal belongings must be kept on the desktop or underneath the work station to assist in maintaining an accessible work space; this also includes mobility aids.

    4. Use of CAT is exclusively for academic purposes.

    5. On occasions where CAT is un-staffed, student users will be asked to exit. Failure to do so may result in the loss of CAT usage privileges for the remaining semester.

    6. No tutoring is allowed in CAT.
    7. Students are responsible for notifying CAT staff of any malfunctioning hardware or software.

Food & Drink

No food is allowed in CAT. Covered water bottles are the only drinks allowed in CAT and must be kept on the floor.

Cell Phone Use

Cell phones must be kept off or on silent upon entering CAt as cell phones are disruptive to students working in the lab. In the event students need to make or take a call, students must exit the lab.

Usernames and Passwords

Students' usernames and passwords are individually issued and  must not be used by anyone other than the person to who it is issued. Entrance to each workstation is monitored by the student's username/password. All log‐ins are recorded. Therefore, it is important that students log‐in using his/her own username.

Equipment Etiquette

  1. No assembly language programming is allowed on CAT equipment.

  2. Do not move or rearrange any CAT equipment or any computer desktop screens.

  3. Do not ask library personnel to adjust, repair, or rearrange CAT equipment.

  4. No access to inappropriate, obscene materials from any computer in CAT is allowed.

  5. Do not download any software or plug-ins onto any CAT computer.

Headsets

Headsets are available specifically for the use of accessible technology; students may request a loner headset from CAT personnel.

Training

CAT staff provides an array of training to AEC students. Students can also learn to use the software independently by utilizing resources readily available on the Software webpage. Here you will find tutorials/demos, helpful tips, guides, and much more.

Technology Support

CAT staff provides software/hardware support for technologies offered through the Center for Accessible Technology. Software support constitutes providing a student with basic direction in a student's efforts to learn various software applications. Software support is not formal training. Students can also learn independently by utilizing the resources that are readily available on the CAT website under the Software link. Lab Abuse

Lab abuse constitutes any misconduct of equipment and/or CAT/AEC policies and procedures. If there is evidence of lab abuse, the CAT/AEC reserves the right to change any or all pass codes immediately as well as take any other necessary actions. The AEC reserves the right to discontinue CAT usage if any of the listed or a combination of the listed policies are violated or abused. Inappropriate conduct by students or any abuse of the Adaptive Technology Center is subject to discipline as outlined in Sections 41301- 41304 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations.

File Sharing of Copyrighted Works

  1. Students should be aware that the unauthorized peer‐to‐peer file sharing of copyrighted works, including music, pictures, and movies, is a violation of campus computer use policy. It is also illegal and may carry significant money and/or criminal sanctions. It is the responsibility of students who are downloading or uploading documents to make certain that they are not copyrighted works, or that the student has the permission of the copyright holder. 
  2. Students may not copy software from the hard drives; all applications are copyrighted and legally protected.

Saving Files

  1. The Center for Accessible Technology is not responsible for any lost work.

  2. CAT staff reserves the right to clean up hard drives at any time, causing any saved work on the hard drive to be lost.

  3. For this reason, all students using the Center for Accessible Technology must back up all personal files onto a USB drive, CD, or a cloud storage service.

  4. 15 minutes prior to closing, CAT staff recommends that students begin to back up all work.

 Accessing Online Personal Accounts

The AEC/CAT is not responsible for the confidentiality of students' personal accounts; students should sign-out of all personal accounts before logging off the computer and leaving the lab.

Private Rooms

Rooms 230A, 230B, and 230C are private rooms reserved for students who need to use document reader or voice recognition software. Students who need to use document reader/voice recognition software are, therefore, given first priority to these rooms. Only one person allowed in a room at one time, unless otherwise authorized by CAT staff.

If you need to use document reader/voice recognition software, and you know ahead of time what day(s) you would like to come in, please talk with CAT staff at the front desk.

Priority Sign-Up Regulations for Audio/Private Rooms:

  • Students using audio/private rooms for specific adaptive software purposes (i.e., document readers and/or voice recognition software) will receive priority to the rooms.

  • Students may sign‐up for a room for up to 2 hours.

  • If you are signing up for any of the four rooms more than once in a day, you must leave at least a 2 hour gap between reservations (i.e., sessions for each of the four rooms can NOT be consecutive.)

  • You may not sign up for a room more than one week in advance.

  • You must claim the room within 15 minutes of the time you requested, or your time slot will be forfeited.

 What to do when MLK library internet connection is down or you cannot access your CAT desktop:

  • Report to the front desk or to CAT staff

  • Go to the AS Computer Service Center located in the Student Union, top floor.

  • Remember all your personal files need to be backed up and portable.

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW THE ABOVE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. STUDENTS WHO VIOLATE THESE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MAY HAVE SERVICES SUSPENDED AND FORMAL DISCIPLINARY ACTION BROUGHT AGAINST THEM.
