Santa Cruz Area Chapter
Founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated alums, the Santa Cruz Area Chapter is the oldest and largest chapter of the San José State University Alumni Association. The Santa Cruz Area Chapter's mission is to raise the level of community awareness of SJSU and its contributions — past, present and future. This group provides an opportunity for alumni and friends of the university to meet for social, cultural, educational and fundraising events. The Chapter fulfills its mission by sponsoring various events that bring members together to celebrate and support our alma mater. Our activities have included (or will include):
- Tour of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
- Tour of AnnieGlass factory
- Wine tasting and tour of Bargetto Winery
- Annual Sports Banquet honoring Santa Cruz County athletes currently competing for SJSU
- Annual family and new member picnic
- Annual Holiday Dinner and Auction to benefit our scholarship fund
- Bus trip to home football game
In addition, the Simpkins family generously hosts Chapter members, the Spartan Band and Sammy Sparta (SJSU mascot) for a continental breakfast during the annual Wharf to Wharf race in July. The Board of Directors meets monthly to perform Chapter business. The Chapter President sits as a voting member of the San José State University Alumni Association Board of Directors and acts as liaison between the Chapter and the main campus organization.
Our Scholarship Program helps to support Santa Cruz County students who are entering SJSU. It is the third largest scholarship program of its kind among all of the alumni associations in the CSU system. We also accept donations for and award scholarships to members of the Spartan Marching Band. Membership is open to alumni and friends of SJSU. We actively seek new members and volunteers to help with events. Annual activity fees are $20 per person or $30 per family.
