3. EXCEPTIONAL WOMEN EXECUTIVES
Exceptional Women Executives and the Commonwealth Club invite you to attend a
talk by David Kelley, founder and chairman of the design firm, IDEO Product
Development. As founder of the 15th most innovative company in the world (as
ranked by Business Week), Kelley has profound insights on how companies can
foster a culture of innovation. He will explain the roles that people can play
in an organization to foster creativity and ways in which design thinking can
transform corporate culture. This event is part of the weeklong ZeroOne San José
Festival: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge. A reception for EWE members will
be held prior to the event in the King Library.

4. SPARTAN PARTY - VISITING SPARTANS NEAR YOU
Want to meet Spartans in your local area? Do you travel with the football team and wonder what to do prior to the game? Or, are you a parent/family member of a player and travel for the games? Well, the Alumni Association would like to extend an invitation to join us prior to all of the away football games this season for another round of pregame parties! Everyone is welcome and these events are free of charge.

Lounge will be providing free food and drink specials for all who attend. You
can enter to win prizes and informally meet a few of the Spartan football
coaches. This event is geared toward recent grads from 1995 to present. Come

6. 2ND ALL GREEK REUNION - SAVE THE DATE!
The SJSU Alumni Association has partnered with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to present this year's Second All-Fraternity and Sorority Reunion. At our last event, over 350 proud Spartans came out for a weekend of reconnecting, rejoicing and remembering. The purpose of this reunion is to showcase the best and brightest within the Greek tradition at SJSU. Come share the success stories of our Greek alumni, while honoring the relationships built throughout the years.

8. MISS MONTANA BRAGGING RIGHTS
One of SJSU’s own, Christie Hageman, Music, was crowned Miss Montana 2006 last month in Glendive, Montana. A classically trained soprano, she’ll compete in the Miss America pageant early next year. Hageman’s talent was a jazz rendition of the song “Route 66,” but on the road as Miss Montana she’s vowed to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at every opportunity. “ It’s going to be one of those years that you always look back on,” she told The Billings Gazette.
9. EMMY WINNER - KIET DO
For Atlanta TV reporter Kiet Do, Journalism, it’s turning into a year of firsts. He’s recently become a first-time father and last month received his first Emmy for outstanding TV news reporting. Back in the mid-1990s, after winning the William Randolph Hearst student news competition, he promised if an Emmy ever came his way, he’d publicly thank SJSU and Professor Bob Rucker for helping him snag it. At the awards banquet, he made good on that promise. Congratulations, Kiet!
10. PHILIP AMOS NAMED MARKETING CHIEF OF HOUSERAISING, INC.
Licensed contractor and attorney Philip Amos, Business, was named marketing executive of disaster relief consulting and home rebuilding in Zone Two, the Gulf Coast region, at HouseRaising, Inc. The company is a software service provider to builders of custom home projects. Amos has previously managed construction operations for Goldrich & Kest in Culver City, California, and for Schmitz Development in Stockton.

11. SILVER STATE SPARTANS CONTINUE ON
The Las Vegas Area Alumni Network has developed a new name for their group,
calling themselves the Silver State Spartans. Nevada, known as the Silver State,
will now add to the title representing our group of alumni from the Las Vegas
Metro area. Are you in the Las Vegas area and interested in participating in
future events?

12. LIBRARY POISED FOR ARTS FESTIVAL
As the countdown to ZeroOne San José continues, the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is finalizing plans to participate in this media
arts festival, which runs August 7-13 in downtown San José. King will host the
Pacific Rim New Media Summit, an academic conference starting Monday, August 7.
The library will also serve as the venue for "SPECFLIC," an interactive film on
the future of libraries. Performances will be taped inside King ahead of time,
and on Wednesday, August 9, the interactive "story-event" will be projected onto
the exterior of the library on the campus side of the building. Read

13. CITY COUNCIL APPLAUDS SERVICE LEARNING
Mayor Ron Gonzales and the San José City Council recently honored CommUniverCity with a commendation for its service efforts in the community. CommUniverCity is a collaborative effort between the university and city that engages faculty, students and local residents in mutually beneficial problem-solving and educational initiatives. According to Terry Christensen, SJSU's executive director of the partnership, at an event in April, 457 volunteers completed 2,569 hours of service valued at $30,828.
14. EXHIBIT ON SJSU HERITAGE PLANNED
A highlight of the upcoming sesquicentennial (150th)
celebration planned for calendar year 2007 will be an historical exhibit, which
is being created to commemorate the university's rich heritage. An effort is
underway by members of the 150th planning committee to identify and gather
objects, documents and photographs for this year-long exhibit, which will be on
display at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. The university community is
encouraged to loan the committee any of the above items, as well as clothing or
Spartan memorabilia, for use in the exhibit. Treasured photographs can be

15. EPA RECOGNIZES TRANSPORTATION SOLUTIONS
SJSU’s Associated Students Transportation Solutions has been named in the first-ever list of Best Workplaces for the Commuters for Colleges and Universities released by the Environmental Protection Agency recently. In a letter to Eyedin Zonobi, manager of the AS program, the EPA applauded the university for achieving the National Standard of Excellence award and for being “an innovative leader that is contributing important commuter benefits to your employees and valuable environmental benefits to your community.” We are proud to have designated San José State University as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters as a means of acknowledging your school’s leadership in helping to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

16. VOLLEYBALL PICKED FIFTH IN PRESEASON POLL
The 2006 San José State volleyball team has been picked fifth in the Western
Athletic Conference Coaches’ Preseason Poll released this week. Hawaii is picked
to finish first after winning its 10th consecutive WAC regular-season title last
year. San José State returns two All-WAC players from last season. Junior
outside hitter Jennifer Senftleben was a first-team selection and led the team
with 469 kills. Senior libero Jessie Shull is a three-time All-WAC selection and
led the team in digs at 550. The team finished the 2005 season with a 12-17
overall record and a 7-9 WAC mark. Read more.
17. THREE ALL-LEAGUE PERFORMERS AMONG MEN'S SOCCER CLASS
San José State University head men’s soccer coach Gary St. Clair has announced
the signing of four prospects to a National Letter-of-Intent for the 2006
season. Roberto Castaneda, Eric Cross, Edward Murillo-Jimenez and Sam Shore will
be joining St. Clair’s squad for his 17th year in charge. Cross, Castaneda and
Murillo-Jimenez just recently graduated from California high schools, with the
latter duo as teammates at Watsonville High School. Shore is a transfer from the
University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia, who will have three years of
eligibility remaining when he arrives on the SJSU campus. Read more.
18. 2006 SPARTAN FOUNDATION FUND DRIVE ACHIEVES UNPRECIDENTED SUCCESS
The
2006 Spartan Foundation Athletic Scholarship Fund Drive came to a conclusion on
June 30, 2006 with $1,002,282 collected, the largest amount in a single year, in
support of San José State student-athletes. “This was a year of unprecedented
success for the Spartan Foundation,” said Vince Otoupal Associate Athletic
Director for Development and Executive Director of the Spartan Foundation. “The
Spartan Foundation drive workers, the “team behind the team,” set a significant
goal this year and then went out and achieved it. I am extremely proud to be
associated with this group of Spartans.” Read more.
19. SJSU AWARD 2010 NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL BID
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship will be returning to San José
for the second time in four years in 2010. San José State University will host
first- and second-round games at HP Pavilion on March 18 and 20, 2010, the NCAA
Division I Men’s Basketball Committee announced Thursday. The event will consist
of four first-round games and two second-round games over two days of
competition, with a total of eight different teams assigned to the venue. San
José State is also serving as the host institution for the 2007 West Regional
games at HP Pavilion. Read more.
20. 2005-2006 COMMUNITY RELATIONS YEAR IN REVIEW
Various
Spartan coaches, student-athletes and administrators volunteered their time for
various events around the community during the fall and spring semesters. San
José State University Spartan Athletics has committed nearly 2,000 hours to the
community by volunteering at over 40 events during the 2005-06 academic year.
Administrators, student-athletes and coaches have volunteered at events ranging
from elementary school tutoring to community speaking engagements. Some events
that the Spartans were involved in were GoGirlGo!, Habitat for Humanity and
Pat’s Run. Spartan Athletics is committed to serving the community surrounding the school in and
effort to make a difference for the people who support them. Read more.
