conference on Saturday, April 29, 2006. This year's conference will be
focused on philosophy in a global context. Any paper dealing with any aspect
of philosophy in a global context can be submitted. "Global context"
is to be interpreted broadly so as to include constructive engagement between
different traditions.
Papers in Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, Race
Theory, Social Philosophy, Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy
of Science (broadly construed), Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Logic,
and Philosophy of Religion will all be considered. Faculty will review papers
and select 6-9 papers to be presented at the conference. Papers and questions

17. SJSU ENCOURAGES A CAMPUS OF READING
The Campus Reading Program brings together the members of our campus as students,
faculty and staff share in reading a selected book. The SJSU Campus Reading
Program is sponsored by the Undergraduate Studies Office and the MUSE Program.
A book is selected each year that students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged
to read during the summer. Then, at the start of the fall semester, readers
engage in critique and analysis of the book in small discussion groups. This
has become a common practice at many universities as a way to help members of
a campus community connect — to have something in common — to engage with each
other in talking about their perspectives of a book and to engage in a lively
and intellectual way through a variety of campus activities offered around the
book. A book read by many enriches a campus community.
The summer/fall 2006 book, The Kite Runner, tells a captivating story
relevant to today's world events. The story takes place in Afghanistan,
Pakistan and the Bay Area. San José State University is mentioned twice
in the story and the main character (narrator) attends SJSU. In 1980, when the
author was of high school age, he and his family left Afghanistan and obtained
political asylum in the U.S. Dr. Hosseini, an internist, lives and practices
in the Silicon Valley. He will be on campus in March 2007.

18. ATHLETICS ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE UP:
San José State University reports a significant improvement in its Academic
Progress Rate score, which was released recently by the National Collegiate
Athletic Association, announced Tom Bowen, director of athletics. The 901 overall
score for 2004-05 is a 27-point year-over-year increase. In addition, women's
golf and gymnastics received perfect scores of 1,000; 11 out of 16 sports exceeded
the NCAA benchmark standard score of 925; and nine programs improved their scores
year-over-year. According to Bowen, this announcement demonstrates that SJSU
is committed to recruiting student athletes poised to succeed academically and
athletically. The APR score is designed to measure the academic eligibility,
retention and graduation of an institution's student athletes and its teams.
