5. MUNN HONORED AS TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Linda Munn, ’86 Environmental Studies, might have gotten a late start in her teaching career but she’s making up for lost time now. Named Campbell Union School District’s 2006 Teacher of the Year, the Michigan native told the Campbell Reporter she couldn’t remember when she didn’t want to be a teacher. She’s been teaching at Campbell Middle School since graduating from SJSU.
6. DUNLAP IS PRINCIPAL OF OAKLAND’S NEWEST CHARTER SCHOOL
San Francisco-based Jay Dunlap, ’88 Journalism, is the new principal of a brand new school, Oakland Aviation High School at Oakland International Airport. Aviation High is “unique,” reports the East Bay Business Times, because it “combines academic ambitions with vocational goals.” Dunlap was previously principal at Leadership High School, a charter school that focused on college preparation and leadership. “I’ve worked in some pretty tough schools in California,” he told the Business Times, “and I believe that every single student deserves a high-quality education.”
7. FITNESS COACH MELENDEZ STARTS THE MORNING AT PILATES CARDIOCAMP
By 6 a.m., five days a week, Michelle Melendez, ’01 Communications, is leading a class in early morning stretching on the track at Gunn High School in a workout she calls Pilates Cardiocamp. The exercise regimen includes, besides Pilates, yoga and lots of calisthenics. Previously, she’s taught her Cardiocamp at Mountain View’s Cuesta Park, on Foothill College’s track, and elsewhere on the peninsula. “If you are not thinking right, you will never be the weight you want,” she told the Los Altos Town Crier. “People need to get their minds off losing weight and onto being healthy.”

10. $1.4 MILLION QUAKE RESEARCH GRANT
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.4 million grant to a research team, which includes three SJSU College of Engineering professors. The team will study how building systems respond to earthquakes, focusing specifically on architectural elements such as windows and surface treatments. The researchers include: Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Kurt McMullin, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Winncy Du, and Professor of Electrical Engineering Thuy Le, a University of California faculty member and a practicing consultant engineer. Their plans include building and testing a model structure at the George E. Brown Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation laboratory, which is housed at the University of California, Berkeley. The entire endeavor reflects a worldwide effort among engineers to expand their focus from earthquake safety to earthquake recovery.
11. MILITARY HISTORY RESEARCH ROOMARD
The Burdick Military History Project, sponsored by
SJSU's Department of History and located in Industrial Studies 219C, recently
announced the opening of its new research room, reported Jonathan Roth, chair of
the history department and director of the project. The research room, the only
one of its kind in the CSU system, contains a collection of nearly 5,000 books,
journals, magazines and militaria. The collection provides a unique opportunity
for military historians. "Our motto at the Burdick Project is 'Studying war in
pursuit of peace.' Regardless of the politics of war, it is important to
remember those in the past who by serving in the military, have helped to create
our world," Roth said. He credited volunteer administrator Guy Wilson and
Burdick interns and volunteers with the effort to catalogue this impressive
collection. Although the collection does not circulate, the research room is
open to the public Monday through Friday. For hours, call 408-924-4785. For more
on the project, contact Roth .
12. SJSU'S MINETA TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE TO RECEIVE $8 MILLION IN STATE AND FEDERAL FUNDING
San José State University's Mineta Transportation Institute will
receive $8 million in state and federal funding over the next four years after
winning a tough U.S. Department of Transportation competition pitting SJSU
against 36 of the nation's top research universities. The funding will be used
to expand many of the institute's endeavors including its semi-annual national
symposia on transportation security and finance, its peer-reviewed research on
the same topics, and its master of science in transportation management and
professional certificate programs. "MTI is significantly enhancing the nation's
international geo-economic competitiveness by specializing in top-quality,
practical research," said Rod Diridon Sr., the institute's executive director.

San
José State received a trio of rushing touchdowns from Patrick Perry and a
50-yard scoring toss from Adam Tafralis as they handled the Idaho Vandals,
28-13, at the Kibbie Dome, in Moscow, ID. The Spartans improve to 7-4 overall
and 4-3 in the WAC. Idaho finishes their season at 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the
WAC. Tafralis opened the scoring with just under one minute remaining in the
first-quarter when he connected with John Broussard on a 50-yard touchdown
strike down the middle of the field. The score was the fifth of the season for
Broussard and his fourth scoring pass of 40 yards or more. The second quarter
scoring belonged to the Vandals. Tino Amancio knocked home a 28-yard field goal
and Jayson Bird scored on a two-yard run to take a 10-7 lead entering halftime.
The second-half belonged to the Spartans and the energetic
legs of Perry. The junior scored on a one-yard run with 10:25 remaining in the
third-quarter to give the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. Perry added
a four-yard run at the 10:16 mark of the fourth-quarter and then provided the
capper with a one-yard run with 2:24 remaining. Perry finished the game with 64
yards on 15 carries. Defensively the Spartans held Idaho to 254 yards of offense

For the fourth consecutive year, Shull was named to an
All-WAC team. This is her second selection to the first team, while she was
