1. OLYMPIANS WILL HEAD FOR BEIJING FROM SJSU

San José State University and the City of San José have been selected as the site for U.S. Olympic Team processing for the 2008 Games in Beijing. More than 600 U.S. Olympic Team members, coaches and officials will gather by teams at the university during late July and early August 2008 for two-day stays. Athletes will participate in team briefings, apparel distribution, medical screenings and training before departing for Beijing, where one of the most important Olympic Games in recent history will be held Aug. 8-24, 2008. 3. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PLANS OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION

Celebrate Oktoberfest with the SJSU Alumni Association. A special event including traditional German cuisine, beverages and live music is planned for Friday, September 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. The SJSU community is welcome to join the celebration of the 150th anniversary and kickoff the Stanford football game weekend. Join us on campus at the 7th Street barbecue area across from the Event Center. General admission is $15 and $10 for Alumni Association members. Admission for children under age 12 is just $5.

4. AFRICAN AMERICAN ALUMNI NETWORK RECEPTION SET FOR SEPT. 18

Join the SJSU Alumni Association for a reception in honor of Speed City: From Civil Rights to Black Power. The reception will take place Tuesday, September 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at History Park in San José. The Speed City exhibit looks back at San José State history, highlighting the dynamic San José State athletes who went on to become internationally recognized figures of the Black Power and Civil Rights movements. The event is open to San José State alumni, students and friends. The hors d’oeuvres reception is $10.

5. ALUMNI COLLEGE, GOLDEN GRAD REUNION SET

A major part of Homecoming festivities, Alumni College is a day of learning that will offer a variety of fun and interactive sessions led by SJSU’s best and brightest faculty! These “classes without quizzes” will include topics such as Wine Appreciation, Business Aspects of Climate Change and Dinosaurs in the Twenty First Century. Join us on October 6. This free event is open to SJSU alumni, students and the community.

Members of the Class of 1957 are invited to return to campus for “An Affair to Remember,” the Golden Grad Reunion! Connect with former classmates, visit campus, socialize and enjoy the Homecoming festivities. It is something you won’t want to miss. Join us October 5 - 6! Visit the Golden Grad Reunion Web site.

6. FIMBEL NAMED INTERIM BUSINESS DEAN

Nancie Fimbel has been appointed interim dean of the College of Business effective July 1. A national search for a permanent dean will begin in early fall. Fimbel currently chairs the Committee to Design the Institute for Business Leadership and Entrepreneurial Excellence. She has also served as associate dean of the college, director of the college's graduate programs, acting dean of graduate studies, and chair of the 1995 WASC Reaccredidation Committee.

7. HOMECOMING EVENTS TAKE SHAPE

Join the fun as San José State celebrates Homecoming and its 150th Anniversary with a giant tailgate party on the Football Practice Field on Saturday, October 6. This is a FREE event, but reservations are required. Contact Sheri Bragg at 408-924-1472.

Then make your way to Spartan Stadium as the New Mexico Bowl Champion Spartans take on the Idaho Vandals in this Western Athletic Conference contest. Pregame ceremonies begin at 12:30 p.m. and kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. A special 150th anniversary tribute combining our history with traditional homecoming elements is planned for halftime. 8. GIFT SUPPORTS ACCOUNTING ADVISORY COUNCIL

Abbott, Stringham & Lynch, a Silicon Valley accounting firm, has made a leadership gift of $20,000 to help establish the Accounting Advisory Council at the College of Business. To honor this generous commitment, Professor Howard Turetsky will be recognized as the first Abbott, Stringham, and Lynch Faculty Fellow. The AAC is comprised of representatives from the accounting industry who will help guide the growth of the Accounting & Finance Department at SJSU.

9. NEXT SPARTAN SPOTLIGHT IS JULY 19

The Poor House Bistro, 91 S. Autumn Street, is the site of the next SJSU Athletics Spartan Spotlight event on July 19, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. These events are excellent networking and social opportunities for the young professional. 10. GOLF TEAM LED BY HENDERSON

Bob Henderson, ’88 MBA, is proud owner of the Silicon Valley Drivers, a professional team of golfers that is part of the National Golf League. The team will be hosting the NGL 2007 season opener at the Coyote Creek Golf Club on August 4. The NGL began in northern California two years ago and has since expanded to include teams in Southern California, Las Vegas and Arizona. But don’t look for the fans to be subdued and reverent. 11. TERRELL NAMED COACH AT DELEWARE STATE

World renowned professional bowler Kim Terrell, ’88 Health Science, is new head coach of the women’s bowling team at Delaware State University. A San Francisco native, her first year on tour Terrell won the1989 Professional Women’s Bowling Association Rookie of the Year award. In 2006, she was inducted into the California State Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. “College bowling is where I learned to play the game,” she said in a press release, recalling her years at SJSU. “It’s crucial to develop good players at this stage in their careers.”

12. JACKSON TAPPED FOR EXECUTIVE POSITION AT SAFEWAY

Russell M. Jackson, ’80 Management, made Safeway history when he joined the company in March as senior vice president of human resources. He is the first African American to hold that position within the company. Prior to his Safeway hire, Jackson served as senior vice president of human resources at PG&E. One of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, Safeway operates 1,761 stores in the U.S. and Canada and reported sales of $40.2 billion for 2006. Jackson holds an M.B.A. from St. Mary’s College and a master’s degree from the University of San Francisco.
