1. SUPPORT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

You can now support Alumni Association scholarships through Bring Light! We’re working to raise funds for four interdisciplinary scholarships this summer. 2. CONNECT WITH THE NEWLY IMPROVED SJSU ALUMNI NETWORK

If you haven’t already registered and joined the thousands of Spartans who are using the SJSU Alumni Network,icon: external link now is a great time to check it out and connect with fellow San José State alumni. If you are already part of the network, sign in and explore the new functionality that makes the site easier than ever to use. Invite your friends and colleagues to join the network, create your profile, and share your blog and photos! You can also post jobs for other SJSU graduates to see. It is a great way to reach other Spartans!

3. YOUNG ALUMNI SOCIAL PLANNED FOR JUNE 14

The SJSU Alumni Association is hosting a Networking Social for young alumni and recent graduates on Thursday, June 14, from 7-9 p.m. at the Tied House on San Pedro Square in San José. Interested young alumni are encouraged to RSVP to Marie McCann at 408-924-1109. The event is $5 per person and includes appetizers!

4. GOLDEN GRAD REUNION SLATED FOR OCTOBER 5-6

Calling all members of the Class of 1957! The Golden Grad Reunion is just around the corner. The event includes a campus tour, reception, tailgate and the homecoming football game – plus many opportunities to connect with classmates. Make your plans to attend! 5. AVIATION STUDENTS EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Students from the Department of Aviation and Technology won two first-place awards in the Federal Aviation Administration's inaugural airport design competition. The teams took top honors for entries in the "Airport Operations and Maintenance Challenge" and "Airport Environmental Interactions Challenge." SJSU students also won honorable mentions for two more entries. The competition's purpose was to engage students in addressing airport operations and infrastructure issues and needs. The faculty advisor for all SJSU teams was Triant Flouris, associate professor of aviation.

6. STUDENTS, FACULTY PARTICIPATING IN SALZBURG SEMINAR

Many SJSU students, faculty and administrators are participating in the Salzburg Seminar in Austria this summer. The seminar brings together leaders from around the world to discuss international issues. Twelve students plus SJSU Peer Mentor Program Director Jill Steinberg and Professor of Communication Studies Dennis Jaehne traveled to Austria to take part in the seminar's International Study Program in Global Citizenship.

7. SESQUICENTENNIAL DOCUMENTARY NOW AVAILABLE

"Voices of San José State University," a one-hour documentary produced by Professor Bob Gliner for SJSU's sesquicentennial, is now available for purchase at the Spartan Bookstore and online. The film combines interviews with students, faculty, administrators and alumni with archival photos to provide viewers with insight into SJSU's regional and national roles. 8. FIGONE IS NEW CITY MANAGER

Debra Figone, ’75 French, ’82 M.P.A., has been appointed the city’s new manager by San José Mayor Chuck Reed. Most recently town manager of Los Gatos, Figone has worked in public service for more than 38 years. As San José city manager, she oversees 15 departments and directs operating and capital budgets that total more than $3.2 billion. Mayor Reed said of her appointment: “We wanted a miracle worker, [and] Deb has a huge advantage, knowing the city as she does.” Figone told the press that her greatest challenge will be overcoming the city’s fiscal issues.

9. FORMER CNN ANCHOR DELIVERS COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

Valerie Dickerson Morris, ’68 Journalism, returned to Great Falls, Montana, in May to deliver the commencement address for Great Falls Central Catholic High School, her alma mater. Formerly a headline news business anchor at CNN, Morris has enjoyed a 35-year career in broadcast journalism and collected three California Emmys along the way. Currently, she writes and narrates a CBS Radio Network syndicated column, “With the Family in Mind.”

10. AUTHOR HEADLINES DIVERSITY SUMMIT

The Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan, ’74 Linguistics, delivered the keynote address for Diversity Summit 2007: From Global Vision to Local Action, sponsored by Portland (Oregon) General Electric. Tan’s work has been translated into 25 languages. Her most recent bestselling novel is Saving Fish from Drowning.

11. SAN JOSE STATE ATHLETICS HOSTS SPARTAN SPOTLIGHT

Join young professionals and San José State Athletics for free hors d’oeuvres, drink specials, raffle prizes and more! Bring your friends and join the fun on Wednesday, June 20, at Smoke Tiki Lounge, 152 Post Street in downtown San José. 12. FIFTH YEAR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS NAMED

The 5th-Year scholarships are awarded to Spartan student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility, are committed to graduating from San José State and are in excellent academic standing within the university. Recipients will be assigned jobs within the Athletics Department that will provide them with relevant professional experience toward their future career goals and objectives.

Recipients, with sports and majors, are:
