March 2007Alumni Association News1. SJSU RECEIVES $15 MILLION GIFTSan José State University has received a $15 million gift from Bay Area real estate developer Charles W. Davidson, the largest private gift in its 150-year history. The gift, in support of the College of Engineering, will be used to create endowments to support initiatives and programs in the areas of student and faculty development, leading-edge engineering, innovation and globalization. On March 13, the California State University Board of Trustees approved SJSU’s request to officially name the college the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering. The gift matches the largest gift ever received by the California State University system. WHEN: Monday, March 19, 5:30 p.m. 4. “VOICES OF SAN JOSE STATE” TO AIR ON PBSBob Gliner's film "Voices of San José State" will air on PBS station KTEH channel 54 (cable channel 10 in most parts of the Bay Area) on Thursday, April 5, at 10 p.m. This film reviews some of our history and includes interviews with alumni and faculty who talk about the challenges SJSU has faced with a changing educational environment. 5. SESNON GALLERY SPOTLIGHTS TWO MFA GRADS IN SANTA CRUZArtists Erin V. Sotak and T.S. Anand, both graduates of
SJSU’s M.F.A. program , are featured at the Sesnon Gallery at UC Santa Cruz
through March 17. Sotak is an installation and performance artist concerned with
notions of absurdity, futility, consumption, labor and aesthetics. Anand is an
interdimensional artist interested in creating thought-provoking, visually
stimulating, and trance-inducing environments. More information about the

RAIA HEADS NEW CULINARY PROGRAMChristian Raia, ’94 Art, former director of culinary development/executive chef at the Bakersfield Petroleum Club, was tapped to direct the brand new culinary program at West Hills College Lemoore. He will teach and oversee the program, which includes six culinary courses. “Am I glad to get Christian Raia?” WHCL Dean of Educational Services Stephanie Atkinson-Altson rhetorically asked when speaking to the press. “I’m past glad. I’m ecstatic to fill this position with the top candidate for the job. Christian is a gift to the students who will go through the program.” Earlier in his career, Raia served as executive chef at the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort in San Simeon. 7. ADAMS JOINS BELLARMINE PREP AS VP FOR ADVANCEMENTBrian Adams, ’80 BA Radio/TV/Film, ’94 MS Mass Communications, former vice president for client services at Orloff-Williams Advertising and Public Relations, is the new vice president for advancement at Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school in San José. Adams will oversee development, alumni relations and marketing for the school. Adams taught for 18 years in Santa Clara University’s Communication Department. He has served on the boards of the American Cancer Society/Santa Clara County and YWCA of Silicon Valley. Spartan Spotlight8. REED APPOINTED RED CROSS DIRECTORLarry Reed, ’74 Social Work, is the new executive director of the Merced-Mariposa chapter of the American Red Cross. He has headed Red Cross chapters in the Midwest for the past 15 years and began his career with the Red Cross in 1981 as volunteer coordinator for the Santa Clara chapter. “I’m really looking forward to meeting the community here and helping the chapter continue the great work it is already doing,” he told the press. Last year the Merced-Mariposa chapter assisted more than 200 families. 9. COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ALUMNI SPONSOR SCULPTURETo commemorate the 150th anniversary of San José State University, the College of Education Alumni Board is sponsoring a sculpture entitled "The Educator" to be placed in the courtyard of Sweeney Hall. This sculpture by SJSU alumnus, artist and teacher, Keith Bush, will commemorate the thousands of SJSU teacher graduates of the university. Bush has designed a piece of public sculpture depicting the essence of learning, an adult and child, surrounded by books and tools of learning. He is donating his time and expertise, but help is needed to fund the cost of materials. TOMMIE SMITH RELEASES AUTOBIOGRAPHYOlympian, activist and alumnus Tommie Smith will visit SJSU on Monday, March 12. He will attend a reading and book signing at the main entrance to Clark Hall at 11 a.m. He recently published "Silent Gesture: The Autobiography of Tommie Smith," which is available at the Spartan Bookstore. Smith and teammate John Carlos are immortalized in a sculpture outside Clark Hall depicting the moment they took a stand for human rights on the victory podium at the 1968 Olympics. POWELL NAMED TO WAC ALL-FRESHMAN TEAMForward Brittany Powell has been named to the 2007 Western Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team as selected by the conference’s head women’s basketball coaches. Powell led the Spartans in scoring and rebounding during the WAC season. She averaged 12.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Powell shot 44.5 percent (81-182) from the field and added 18 steals and 10 blocked shots. |
