San José State Celebrates Founders’ Day

Show your Spartan Pride!

Wear your Spartan colors on Friday, May 4, for San José State’s 150th anniversary and Founders’ Day. Join thousands of SJSU alumni in showing your Spartan pride and celebrating our first 150 years! Be a part of the celebration! Wear your Spartan sweatshirt, tie, hat, or T-shirt to work or school no matter where you live.

In addition, a full slate of activities is planned for Friday, May 4, in downtown San José! The festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. at City Hall on the outdoor plaza. The event will feature Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, San José Mayor Chuck Reed, the SJSU Marching Band, the Pep Squad, the ROTC color guard, faculty in academic regalia, and a giant birthday cake. Reed will proclaim May 4, 2007, as San José State University Day. Among the many SJSU community members attending the event will be Jackie Minns, the great-great-granddaughter of SJSU founder George W. Minns. SJSU was established in 1857 as Minns' Evening Normal School.

At 12:30 p.m., a free barbecue lunch will be held on SJSU’s Tower Lawn.

U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings will speak at 2 p.m. in Morris Dailey Auditorium, followed by a panel discussion on “The Future of Higher Education,” which will be moderated by California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed.

All events are free and open to the public. Please join in the celebration. Additional activities planned for the week are listed below.

There are numerous additional activities scheduled throughout the week, and full details are available on the 150th Web site.

On April 29, The Mercury News devoted a 76-page special section to San José State. The special section included alumni remembrances and feature stories on the people, history and events that have shaped San José State.
