Homecoming 2007San José State invites you to take part in Homecoming activities on Saturday, Oct. 6! The day has something to offer everyone. Alumni College, the 150th Anniversary Tailgate Party and the football game against Idaho highlight the activities. Additional activities include the Golden Grad reunion, Humanities Honors program reunion and the Campus MovieFest. Fourth Annual Alumni CollegePresented by the SJSU Alumni Association Alumni College is a day of learning that will offer a variety of fun and interactive sessions led by SJSU’s best and brightest faculty! Sessions include topics such as Wine Appreciation, Business Aspects of Climate Change and Dinosaurs in the Twenty-First Century. This free event is open to SJSU alumni, students and the community. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and classes will conclude at noon with transportation provided to south campus for the football game. View the list of Alumni College courses. For more information please contact Marie McCann at 408-924-1109. 150th Anniversary Tailgate Party “Celebrating Community — A Day to Remember” Join the fun as San José State celebrates Homecoming and its 150th anniversary with a tailgate party on the Football Practice Field. Featuring themed areas (décor, food and entertainment) representing different periods in SJSU history, this is the place to celebrate before the game. Homecoming Football Game - Spartans vs. Idaho1 p.m. Be part of the action as the Spartans take on the Idaho Vandals. Be one of the first Spartan fans to receive a commemorative 2007 Homecoming bandana. You won't want to miss the Homecoming Halftime featuring the Spartan Marching Band, combining the traditional elements of Homecoming and a special tribute to the university’s 150th anniversary. Purchase game tickets online or call 408-924-SJTX. Young Alumni Tailgate10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. This is a great way to meet other SJSU alumni and new graduates. Golden Grad Reunion Tailgate - Class of 195710 a.m - 12:30 p.m. Golden Grads are invited to enjoy a tailgate barbecue as part of the university’s giant celebration. During this five-day New Orleans tour travelers will experience the St. Louis Cathedral, the French Marketplace, a cruise aboard the Steamboat Natchez, Bourbon Street, the St. Louis Cemetery and much more. In addition to visiting tour hot spots, enjoy tasty Southern foods and the soulful sounds of New Orleans throughout your trip. This trip departs April 14, 2008. All proceeds from this trip will be donated to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Campus Events and HeadlinesSJSU researchers find endangered kelpA research team led by San José State University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, has discovered forests of a species of kelp previously assumed endangered or extinct in deep waters near the Galapagos Islands. Their discovery has important implications for biodiversity and the resilience of tropical marine systems to climate change. The paper was published in the Monday, September 24, issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Read more. Kinesiology program hosts open house at new off-campus labThanks to the financial support from many Kinesiology graduates, we have been able to respond quickly to our huge numbers of new Kinesiology students by opening an off-campus laboratory. Initially, the lab will be used for research in biomechanics, but will be available soon to all faculty and students who need a dedicated, undisturbed space to conduct their research. A grand opening and open house will be held Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at 1068 The Alameda in San José. Sam Donaldson to deliver keynote address at RTVJ banquetThe 50th Anniversary Celebration and Reunion for the Radio and Television Journalism program at San José State University is Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Summit Center, 88 South Fourth Street in downtown San José. Volunteers needed for Spartan Preview Day, Oct. 20Spartan Preview Day is an event where prospective students and their families are invited to campus for a fun-filled day of activities, workshops, tours and tons of information! We are looking for volunteers to help welcome prospective students and their families by assisting with check-in, staffing information tents and the campus services fair. Spartans on the MoveModesto stadium renamed in honor of GonsalvesLast month the Peter Johansen High School stadium in Modesto officially became Don Gonsalves Stadium, in honor of the longtime Modesto coach and educator, a ’53 Physical Education graduate who was inducted into the California State Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the California Athletic Director of the Year award in 1990. Hilts joins Cambridge Health AllianceBarry Hilts, ’71 Psychology, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and former associate vice president for the Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services at the University of Pennsylvania, is new vice president for support services at Cambridge Health Alliance, a regional healthcare system, headquartered in Boston, that also serves as a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Schwarzenegger appoints Monterey prosecutor to Cal/EPAMatthew Bogoshian, ’83 Sociology, founder of the Monterey County District Attorney’s Environmental Protection Unit, was appointed general counsel and deputy secretary for law enforcement at California Environmental Protection Agency. Bogoshian joined the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office in 1995 and began his law career in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. Spartan SportsSpartans host food drive at U.C. Davis gameSan José State University will be hosting a food and fund drive to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties on Saturday, Sept. 29, during the home game against the U.C. Davis Aggies. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and cash donations to the east and west gates of Spartan Stadium. Fans who bring two cans of food will receive a two-for-one coupon for tickets to the Nevada game on Nov. 24. Tickets are available online or by calling 408-924-SJTX. Harris, Tafralis Named WAC Players of WeekQuarterback Adam Tafralis and safety Jonathan Harris were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive and defensive players of the week for their efforts in the win against Utah State. Tafralis, a senior from San Bruno, Calif. (Mills HS), completed a career-high 35 passes for a personal-best 426 yards in the 23-20 win at Utah State. He had three touchdown passes, including the 31-yard game-winner to David Richmond with 53 seconds left in the contest as the Spartans trailed 20-16. Harris, a junior from Oakland, Calif. (College of San Mateo), made five tackles (3 solo) and intercepted an Aggie pass at the San José State 12-yard line preserving a three-point lead at the time. |
