My daughter and I come to every game, and if I have tickets left over, I give them away to someone going to the ticket office on 7th Street. At last year’s first home game, I gave an extra ticket to an elderly gentleman. Usually, when I give tickets away, I never see the people again—they sit in some other open section. But to our surprise, when we went to our seats, there was Glenn Stewart sitting in the seat I gave him. Talking with Glenn throughout the game, I found out that he was a 1950 graduate of San José State and went to school on the GI bill after serving in the South Pacific during WW II. He fought in Okinawa, received a Purple Heart and his unit received a presidential citation for valor. During the late 1940s, Glenn was also a cheerleader at football games. He’s been coming to Spartan football games since graduation. He’s 86 years old now and drives to the games from his home in San Mateo. After that first game, I made sure Glenn got one of my tickets for every home game for the rest of the season—on one occasion, two tickets so he could bring his granddaughter. By the second or third game, Glenn started to get up and lead old cheers from the 40s for our section. At first the people around us were kind of shocked, but by the end of the game they were all doing the cheers, and proceeded to do so for the rest of the season. Now other regulars in our section make it a point to come talk with Glenn. They have told me in no uncertain terms that I had better get Glenn a ticket for all games—or they will! This year, so that he doesn’t have to walk as far to the stadium after he parks, we are surprising him with his own parking pass. Glenn loves SJSU, Spartan football and life. My daughter and I are grateful that we met Glenn and hope he can continue to come to games for many more years. Thanks to John for sending in this story. Go Spartans!
