Top StoryPresidential Search Committee Named, to Meet MondayThe California State University Board of Trustees will begin the search this month for a new president of San José State University to succeed retiring President Don W. Kassing. The first meeting of the search committee will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Monday, January 14, in Room 225B at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, 150 E. San Fernando St., San José. This is the first and only search committee meeting that will be open to the public. Read more. Alumni Association EventsSJSU Alumni Day at Men's Basketball Saturday, February 16 Kick off Alumni Day with a celebration! Attend the pre-game event at Smoke Tiki in downtown San José. Admission is $5 for Alumni Association members, $10 for non-members; appetizers are included. To RSVP for the pre-game event, please contact Marie McCann at 408-924-1109. SJSU News and EventsApplication Deadlines Set for Fall 2008SJSU has decided to accelerate application deadlines for first-time freshmen and transfer students. The new deadlines were selected because of the high volume of applications received for fall 2008 and limits on campus capacity. Prospective freshmen must apply online by 11:59 p.m. Friday, February 15. Transfer students must apply online by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, April 1. Deadlines for graduate students have not changed. SJSU Ranks Third in International StudentsSan José State University ranked third in the nation for the total number of international students at master's degree granting colleges and universities in 2006-2007, according to a recent survey. Nearly 1,900 international students enrolled at San José State, according to the Open Doors report published annually by the Institute of International Education with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Spartan Athletics Road Show Visits the East BayJoin Athletic Director Tom Bowen, basketball coaches George Nessman and Pam DeCosta, and head football coach Dick Tomey Wednesday, January 16, for the Spartan Road Show at Diablo Country Club. Spartans on the MoveValdez honored at International Latino Film FestivalLuis Valdez, '64 English, was guest of honor at the 11th International Latino Film Festival held last month at the Camera 12 Cinema in downtown San José. The tribute to the 67-year-old Valdez, who founded El Teatro Campesino and directed such Hollywood hits as La Bamba, included screenings of the 2005 documentary The Legacy of Luis Valdez: Father of Chicano Theater, the 1994 film Little Louie, and the 2002 film Ballad of a Soldier. In a statement to the press, Valdez said: "The legacy is not about honoring a statue. The legacy is about taking the honors and taking the tributes and passing that spotlight on to the next generation." Harrison Appointed Executive Director of New LeafAnn Harrison, '90 Public Relations, former director of Friends Outside, a program for prisoner mothers in Salinas, and most recently executive director of Marin Services for Women, is the new executive director of San Francisco's New Leaf: Services for Our Community. Known for her success at financial management and fundraising, she will oversee a staff of 45 clinicians and therapists. In the past, New Leaf has primarily provided mental health, substance abuse and youth support programs for gay men and transgender individuals. One of Harrison's goals, she told the press, is to serve more lesbian and bisexual women. Vazquez Joins Abramson Church & StaveRafael Vazquez, '99 Criminal Justice, former deputy district attorney in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, accepted a position as associate attorney at Abramson Church & Stave, a law firm based in Gonzales that specializes in agriculture business, business law and mergers and acquisitions. A native of King City, Vazquez received his law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Spartan SportsMen's Basketball Defeats Santa ClaraC.J. Webster provided his third double-double of the season and Tim Pierce continued his run of impressive performances against the Broncos as the SJSU men's basketball team defeated Santa Clara, 62-59, in a Rivalry Series match-up at the Leavey Center on January 7. Six Men's Soccer Players Recognized for AcademicsSan José State University had an all-time high of six players named to the 2007 Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer team. Hiroki Akiyama, Ed Brand, Savio Carrijo, Oscar Monjaras, Jacob Morrison and Sam Shore all met the necessary criteria to earn recognition for head coach Gary St. Clair's program. This is the first time that the Spartans have had multiple Academic All-MPSF honorees in a season, having had single selections in each of the past three years, as well as in 2002. Akiyama is now a three-time Academic All-MPSF honoree. This is the eighth academic honor of his SJSU career in all. He was presented with an award at San José State’s annual Scholar-Athlete Celebration for posting the fourth highest cumulative GPA, 3.736, among all Spartan male student-athletes for the 2006-07 school year. |
