SJSU News and EventsThree Finalists Named for SJSU Presidency The California State University has named three finalists for the SJSU presidency. Steele, former president of Chevron Latin America and dean of the Silberman College of Business at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has been appointed dean of the College of Business. Learn more. "Bobby's House" Wins Best ComedyStudent filmmakers Jonathan Magram and Rober Krakower won the Best Comedy award for their short film "Bobby's House" in the Campus MovieFest National Grand Finale at the historic Hudson Theatre in New York City. The film previously won awards at the campus and regional levels of the movie competition, which is an annual part of Homecoming activities. Richard Tieszen Named 2008 President's ScholarProfessor Richard Tieszen, an international expert on the philosophy of mathematics, is the recipient of the 2007-2008 President's Scholar Award, recognizing a faculty member who has achieved widespread recognition based on the quality of his or her scholarship, performances or creative activities. Major Gifts Announced for Biomed, EngineeringSJSU has received a $1.3 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to overhaul its biology curriculum and make all classes more inquiry-based, more hands-on and more multidisciplinary. The grant is part of $60 million awarded to 48 schools to help usher in a new era of science education. Learn more. The Newnan Brothers Excellence in Teaching Endowment has been created to recognize and honor outstanding achievement in teaching by faculty members through a $1 million gift from Don Newnan and his late brother Dean Newnan, both alumni and former faculty members in the Davidson College of Engineering. Business Students Sweep Awards at Strategy Competition Undergraduate and graduate teams from SJSU completed an unprecedented sweep of awards at the International Collegiate Business Strategy Metro Fountain Blues Festival Grammy winner Robert Cray will headline the longest running free blues festival in America Saturday, May 10 from 12:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the San Carlos Plaza at San José State University. Spartans on the MoveKimball Named Nevada County's UndersheriffRichard Kimball, '78 Criminal Justice, new undersheriff of Nevada County, Calif., joined the county's Sheriff's Department in 2002 as a deputy. He was promoted to sergeant in 2004 and to jail lieutenant in 2007. He began his career in law enforcement as an officer in the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department. In 1974, he won the World Cross Country Meet in Milan, Italy--the first American to win the race--and for that achievement scored a cover on Runner's World magazine. Gold Wins UNC's Tanner Teaching AwardRachelle Gold, '93 Humanities, received the Tanner Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence from the University of North Carolina at Chapel. She holds a doctorate in education from UNC. Demers Publishes Book on Character-BuildingJudy Demers, '78 BS Human Performance, '04 MS Kinesiology, recently published Character-Building Activities: Teaching Responsibility, Interaction and Group Dynamics (Human Kinetics, Inc.). A member of the Bay Area Physical Education and Health Subject Matter Project, she teaches physical education and P.E. leadership at Castillero Middle School in San José. Lowery Drafted by New York Jets, Four Others Sign ContractsDwight Lowery, San José State University's first two-time, first-team All-America football player, was picked by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2008 National Football League draft. He was the 113th selection in the draft. Following the draft, John Booker, Matt Castelo, Waylon Prather and Adam Tafralis all signed free agent contracts with NFL teams. Learn more. Women's Golf Advances to RegionalsThe Spartans are one of 63 teams invited to play in the NCAA Women's Golf Regional Championships as one of 21 teams playing in the West Regional taking place at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club, May 8-10.
