Joel Franks received a BA and MA in history from San Jose State and a Ph.D. in the Program in Comparative Culture, University of California, Irvine. He has taught in the Social Science Department since 1988, primarily in the area of Asian American history. He has also taught American Studies courses such as American Civilization and the American Dream. He has published in the area of Asian American Studies and Sport Studies--most recently Hawaiian Sports in the Twentieth Century (2002).
