Dr. Underdal is a native son of the State of Montana. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Montana, an M.A. from Indiana University, and a M. Phil and Ph.D. from Columbia University. He is a retired U.S. Air Force officer who taught many years at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was the Deputy Department Head for U.S. History. He came to San Jose State in 1984 from the Defense Intelligence College in Washington, D.C., where he was Professor of Strategic Intelligence and Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs.

Dr. Underdal has been at San Jose State University for 17 years where he specializes in Minority History, Native American History, History of the West, and U.S. Diplomatic History.
