Karen Fjelstad is a cultural anthropologist interested in transnational rituals, the globalization of religion, psychological anthropology, and Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American studies. She is a graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the author of several articles on the Vietnamese Mother Goddess Religion. She is a co-editor, with Nguyễn Thị Hiền of Possessed by the Spirits: Mediumship in Contemporary Vietnamese Communities (Cornell Southeast Asia Program, 2006). Her most recent publication is a co-authored ethnography titled Spirits without Borders: Vietnamese Spirit Mediums in a Transnational Age (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).
