Community Service & Leadership

There are many ways to serve the community in addition to course-based community learning. You can participate in service leadership programs, team with existing community service projects or volunteer on your own. AmeriCorps Bridging Borders

SJSU Center for Community Learning & Leadership hosts an AmeriCorps program. Members serve at a community partner organization and receive training and support throughout the year. Members earn a monthly living stipend and an Education Award. Citizenship or legal permanent residency and one year of college is required for eligibility. AmeriCorps members can serve in three ways:

*   Peer Leader for University Service-Learning (PLUS),

*   Community Educator, or

*   Community-based Tutor.

Project SHINE (Students Helping In the Naturalization of Elders)

Project SHINE links college students with older immigrants and refugees in the San José community who are seeking to learn English, obtain U.S. citizenship and become more engaged in their community. SHINE students commit to serving as a tutor for 20 hours a semester through a community learning class.
