There are two graduation activities that current and upcoming graduates can attend:
The Department of Art & Art History Convocation will be held at the Music Concert Hall at 6:00pm on Wednesday May 24, 2017. Graduates from Summer 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, and Summer 2017 are invited to participate in the ceremony. The names of all attending graduates will be called.
The San José State University Commencement will be held at Spartan Stadium on May 27, 2017 for all graduates (both undergraduate and graduate students). More information can be found in the Commencement Guide.
Tickets - Go on sale April 3rd!!!
Tickets are $12 and children 3 years and under get free admission, but will not have a seat. Graduates do not need a ticket. Three tickets will be sold per graduate. Approximately 300 tickets will be sold. The tickets can be purchased at the Event Center Box Office on campus in person or they can submit an order via fax using the attached ticket order form. A $4.00 processing fee will be charged for this option, but it includes mail delivery. View event ticketing for more information. On May 8, 2017 any unpurchased tickets for the graduation will be released to the general public.
Attending graduates will walk across stage and their name will be read by area. Business casual attire is encouraged for both students and guests.
Historically most students have worn cap and gown for undergraduates (BA and BFA); or cap, gown and hood for graduates (MA and MFA). These will be available for sale through the campus bookstore (or you may be able to borrow one from a friend and then purchase only your tassel and/or hood). Department undergraduate students should purchase the white tassel. Department graduate students should purchase the black tassel and white hood for MA or brown hood for MFA. The SJSU Spartan Bookstore will be selling regalia from April to May. Students may make purchases in the bookstore or online. Announcements are also available through the bookstore.
In order to purchase tickets, you must RSVP first. Event Center Box Office is updated weekly with a new RSVP listing. New RSVP's will be allowed to purchase tickets the following week. All RSVP's must be received by May 15th in order to have your name appear in the program. All other RSVP's received after this deadline will NOT appear in the program.
Day of Event
All participating students must check in at the registration station upon arrival. Graduates MUST arrive between 4:30pm and no later than 5:15pm to check in and begin lining up. The processional will begin at 6:00pm sharp. Doors will close 10 minutes prior to processional. The ceremony should last approximately one hour. The reception begins following the ceremony in the Art Quad.
All guests attending the convocation ceremony will require a ticket. Children under 3 who do not require a seat are FREE. No stroller, carriers, tripods, baggage, or other items that will obstruct the aisles permitted. A designated area will be available for strollers to be left at your own risk. No noisemakers, poppers, silly string, blow horns, or balloons will be permitted and will be confiscated at the door.
The department is not responsible for production and distribution of diplomas. Official diplomas are mailed 2 to 3 months after students' graduating semester from Admissions & Records office. Please contact them at (408) 283-7500.
