Affordable Learning Solutions

A California State University-wide Affordable Learning Initiative was developed to address the high cost of content materials that students encounter. The initiative promotes the use of high quality, open educational resources and low/no cost content materials.
 
At San Jose State University, an effort to make learning more affordable for our students is underway. The library and Center for Faculty Development have developed resources that offer assistance with the selection of materials for courses. For assistance in exploring affordable learning options for your course, please contact our instructional designer, Jennifer Redd, jennifer.redd@sjsu.edu.

Accessibility

Accessibility in the Classroom 

eCampus is dedicated to improved Accessibility in San Jose State's online classrooms. Click on our Accessibility site for more information on what instructors can do to ensure all students receive a quality education.

Build an Accessible Website

Instructors can now build their own accessible website via SJSU's new, fully-supported web building application Website Builder. Go the the Web Services Website Builder page to request a site, read tutorials and sign up for training on Website Builder.

Instructors teaching online, web-supplemented and/or mixed-mode courses are encouraged to email eCampus their website URL, which we will link to the course listing in the eCampus Schedule. This helps prospective students choose the right classes - i.e. an out-of-state or out-of-country students may not want to register for an online course requiring on-campus meetings.

To link your course listing to your website, email the Course Name (BIOL 109), Term (Summer 09), and 5-digit Class Number (30430) to ecampus@online.sjsu.edu. (Please Note: the 5-digit class number must be included for us to link to your site.)

Copyright and Fair Use

The SJSU library offers a comprehensive guide discussing all aspects of copyright, intellectual property, and fair use.  When selecting resources for your course, make sure that proper copyright and fair use policies have been followed.

Digital Art and Media

Media Services

Instructors can browse a 9,000+ lending media library and reserve audio/visual equipment, such as video recorders and microphones, through SJSU Media Services at http://www.sjsu.edu/mediaservices/services/. Instructors interested in reserving audio/visual equipment should call 408.924.2888 for more information.

WorldImages

csu_logoThe internationally recognized WorldImages database provides access to the CSU IMAGE Project. It contains almost 70,000 images, is global in coverage and includes all areas of visual imagery. WorldImages is accessible anywhere and its images may be freely used for non-profit educational purposes. Most of them are 1040 X 768 pixels and are the appropriate size to use with programs like Desire2Learn, WebCT or Powerpoint.  The images can be located using many search techniques, and for convenience they are organized into over 700 portfolios which are then organized into subject groupings. We're happy to announce we purchased subscriptions to two online publications for all SJSU faculty. Online Classroom and Distance Education Report are monthly and bi-monthly, respectively, newsletters that provide resources on higher education professional development and insight on e-learning.

Instructional Design Process

The following instructional design process can be used as a guide to assist faculty as they design and develop an online course. The process outlines the goals, activities necessary to meet the goals, and the outcomes that can be expected. This process connects with the categories identified in the online course evaluation rubric. The six categories include Learner Support and Resources, Online Organization and Design, Instructional Design and Delivery, Assessment and Evaluation of Student Learning, Innovative Teaching with Technology, and Faculty Use of Student Feedback. Eluminate

elluminate_logoElluminate is San Jose State's preferred web-conferencing application. Schedule synchronous, online meetings in a virtual classroom where you can share PowerPoint presentations, videos, chat with students and even conduct real-time group work. Elluminate sessions are scheduled using the "Online Rooms" tool in Desire2Learn. To begin using this powerful teaching and communication technology check out the tutorials and training materials below.
