Clavichord to Fortepiano:
Mini Concert and Presentation Featuring the Historic Keyboard Collection
Dr. Richard Sogg uses the Beethoven Center’s historic keyboard collection to demonstrate the fundamental difference between the three most common keyboard
instruments of the Baroque and Classical periods--the
clavichord, the harpsichord, and the fortepiano--in
comparison with the modern piano.
Dr. Sogg is a retired Stanford Medical School professor of
neuro-ophthalmology. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he
studied piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Beryl
Rubinstein. He was the accompanist for the Harvard Glee
Club during his student years there and has worked locally
with John Delevoryas and Adolph Baller. Most recently he
has studied with Menahem Pressler, founder of the Beaux
Arts Trio.
