BA, Life Science, Preparation for teaching (preparation for elementary school teaching)
Description of the Program:
The BA in Life Science, Preparation for Elementary Teaching, is a unique undergraduate degree that provides students with an interest in science and a desire to teach elementary school with the opportunity to specialize in science rather that pursuing a generalist degree. Students prepare for careers as elementary teachers (K-8) with an emphasis in science.
The BA - Life Science program, in general, does not prepare students for graduate work in any one of the sciences. The degree program is currently under revision with the ultimate goal of strengthening it with respect to science preparation, setting the stage for greater post-baccalaureate specialization in a specified science discipline.
For students planning to apply to a multiple subject credential program for becoming an elementary or middle-school science teacher, the following course work was designed to meet requirements of both the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for diversified subject matter preparation and of San Jose State University for a BA - Natural Science degree. As mentioned above, the curriculum is under revision; part of the impetus for this revision is to meet new standards established by the CTC. The new curriculum is targeted to go into place no later than 2004. Currently, the BA - Life Science program satisfies all requirements for a supplementary authorization in science.
Minimum grade point average (GPA) criteria may be required for verification of subject matter competency. Completion of the program will not guarantee admission to the credential program. Like all other applicants, students must meet credential program standards and undergo screening for admission. See "Teacher Preparation" in the SJSU catalog for information on application and admission to credential programs.
Note: Students who have completed another major should consult with an advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences who specializes in teacher preparation to determine requirements for multiple subject matter competency certification in life science.
