History of the Department

The Biomedical Engineering Department was officially established as an independent department on July 1, 2018.  Development of the BS and MS degree programs began in 2006, with the following major milestones:

  • 2007: First Industry Advisory Council meeting
  • 2007: Concentration in Biomedical Devices within the MS General Engineering program
  • 2007: Undergraduate minor in Bioengineering
  • 2008: Concentration in Bioengineering within the BS General Engineering program
  • 2010: BS and MS Biomedical Engineering programs approved by SJSU
  • 2011: CSU Chancellor approves BS and MS Biomedical Engineering degree programs
  • 2012: First BS BME graduate (May)
  • 2012: First dedicated BME faculty joins the program (August)
  • 2013-14: Two new BME faculty join the program
  • 2015: ABET accreditation visit; BS Biomedical Engineering degree program accredited effective Oct 14 through Sept 2018
  • 2013-17: Faculty strength grows to five – two more new BME faculty join the program
  • 2017: New suite of BME offices and dedicated BME labs completed
  • 2017: ABET accreditation visit (September)
  • 2018: Guna Selvaduray appointed chair of the new Biomedical Engineering Department
  • 2018:  Student population grows to 340 undergraduates and 110 graduate students
