Students should consult the Engineering Student Success Center for definitive advise about:
- What GE courses Software Engineering students need to take
- Waivers and substitutions for equivalent courses taken elsewhere
The GE Requirements
Basically, all SJSU undergraduate students need to take courses in each of the following areas. Note that one course can fulfill several areas simulateneously:
- Basic Skills (Areas A1, A2, and A3)
- Science and Math (Areas B1, B2, and B3)
- Humanities and Arts (Areas C1, C2, and C3)
- Social Science (Areas D1, D2, and D3)
- Human Understanding and Development (Area E)
- American Institutions (Areas F1, F2, and F3)
- Physical Education
- SJSU Studies (Areas R, S, V, and Z)
Notes
- Except for SJSU Studies, all areas can be satisfied by lower division courses taken at a community college.
- Area Z is a prerequisite for areas R, S, and V.
- Area Z is fulfilled by Engineering 100W, Technical Reports.
- Passing the Writing Skills Test (WST) is a prerequisite for all Area Z courses.
- Areas A3, B1, B2, and B3 are waived for Software Engineering Students.
- Second Baccalaureat candidates only need to take SJSU Studies.
