Work IV Frequently Asked Questions: Students
Here are some common questions you may have about WorkAbility IV and other disability-related services on campus.
The WorkAbility IV program provides students with disabilities, who are consumers of the Department of Rehabilitation, the necessary career planning and pre-employment services to achieve one’s academic and career goals.
The Disability Resource Center provides both students and employees with accommodation needs. The Center works closely with faculty and staff to determine appropriate services and provides access for persons with disabilities in the classroom and throughout the campus.
2. What is the difference between the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and the Employment Accommodation Resource Center (EARC)?
While the DRC provides students and employees with accommodation needs, the EARC is a program within DRC that serves only employees with disabilities on campus.
The Workability IV program is a pre-employment program for San Jose State University students with disabilities designed to help you with your academic and career development. Students are offered access to all Career Center services in career development and employment, but additionally students receive customized services to address disability-related issues and concerns.
4. Why do I have to be a consumer with the Department of Rehabilitation to sign-up with WorkAbility IV?
The California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) works in partnership with WorkAbility IV, providing services and advocacy to consumers resulting in employment, independent living, and equality for individuals with disabilities. Only a consumer of DOR is eligible for WorkAbility IV services.
If you qualify as a DOR consumer, you will receive vocational rehabilitation services tailored to assist you in preparing for, securing, retaining, or regaining competitive employment. Services may include career assessment and counseling, pre-employment skills, monetary assistance for job-related activities, career education and training, and/or assistive technology training to be successful in the classroom or on the job.
Contact your local DOR office and ask about eligibility to receive services. Once your case is opened with DOR, you will meet with a counselor to start discussing your individual plan of employment.

Whether it is your instructor, employer, or classmate, discussing your disability with anyone is a personal choice. Some people are very open and candid about their disability, while others are more discreet. However, should you require an accommodation while on campus or on the job, you will have to outline the reasoning for an accommodation request. The WorkAbility IV program and Disability Resource Center can assist you with questions about self-identifying and disclosing your disability.
