Position obtained: Advisory position with Grant Thornton senior year

"Being able to have a job lined up before graduation was my goal and I'm happy that I was able to achieve it."

What made you interested in this career path?

I have an interest in business and I really wanted to work with one of the top accounting firms.

Tell us about the organization and position.

Grant Thornton is one of the world's leading organizations of independent audit, tax and advisory firms.

How did you find your position?

I went to the career center and the counselor there really helped me polish my resume and that's really important! It completely changed my way of editing my resume or approaching interview questions later on.

I began attending networking events like "Meet the Firms" where accounting students can meet with partners and representatives from the Big Four accounting firms. Searching for a job/internship at first was discouraging because I didn't get an internship, but I never gave up.

I wanted to be proactive so I got involved with organizations like the Becker Professional Education, ISACA, Spartan Toastmasters, volunteer work, CalCPA, and other activities. I even competed at ISACA competitions. My resume became really strong and I spent a lot of time preparing for networking and interviewing. Then as I started to apply to jobs online, I was getting many interviews.

What tips would you give your fellow Spartans?

Much of my success comes from being persistent, willing to ask for help, learn how to create a strong resume, be comfortable networking, being well prepared for the interview, and working hard academically to have a good GPA which is important in my field especially with the big accounting firms.
