The video has three distinct sections: One with an overview of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, a second section with information on each department or school in the college, and finally a section on co-curricular programs at San José State University. Text for Section 1:The College of Applied Sciences and Arts is home to 12 departments and schools offering over 20 outstanding degree programs helping to shape the future of how we live, work, and play. The faculty are recognized as leaders in their field and maintain strong working relationships with community professionals. Programs include substantial hands-on experiences. They build on a solid theoretical foundation with extraordinary internship and clinical opportunities in a region known for being on the cutting edge. All programs share a commitment to our students, to community service, and to the highest professional ethics. The College of Applied Sciences and Arts is where excellence in education results in highly trained professionals prepared to assume positions of responsibility and leadership. Text for Section 2: JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATIONSAs the oldest and largest accredited mass communication program in northern California, the School of Journalism & Mass Communications offers bachelor's degrees in Journalism, with concentrations in print, photo and magazine journalism, and broadcast news, as well as bachelor's degrees in Advertising and Public Relations, and a master's degree in Mass Communications. The School has trained thousands of outstanding media professionals for successful careers throughout the nation and the world. HEALTH SCIENCEHealth Science is the multidisciplinary study of community health, health services delivery, disease prevention, and health promotion throughout our life span. Options offered by the Health Science Major include concentrations in Gerontology and Health Administration and special programs in conjunction with the community colleges, such as dental hygiene and respiratory therapy. Soon it will be possible to earn an accredited Master of Public Health degree from any location through a Distance Education Program. NURSINGThe School of Nursing is over 50 years old - the first in the California State University system to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The school is proactive in addressing the critical nursing shortage in the Bay Area by offering accelerated programs supported by the Betty Moore and Valley Foundations. Utilizing the latest simulator technology, students have opportunities to practice skills before taking care of hospitalized patients, and get to experience clinical situations they might be exposed to in the health care setting. NUTRITION & FOOD SCIENCEThe Nutrition and Food Science department prepares graduates for careers as nutritionists, food scientists, dietitians, packaging technologists, environmental health specialists, and food service professionals. The dietetics program qualifies students for admission to American Dietetic Association accredited internships. Every student completes a field experience course under the supervision of a professional in the discipline who serves as their mentor. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPYOccupational therapy is based on building skills for the job of living: performing the meaningful activities of daily life, such as self-care, and activities at home, at school, at work, and at play. Occupational therapists are uniquely client-centered professionals; they work with people of all ages and disabilities with specific emphasis on the social, emotional and physical effects of illness and injury. KINESIOLOGYKinesiology explores the art and science of human movement. Here students gain professional training in careers related to sport psychology, adapted physical activity, teaching, sports management, the fitness industry, and physical therapy. In addition, dozens of sport-related activities are available to all students like aerobics, yoga, kayaking, social dance and tennis, to name just a few. AEROSPACE STUDIESThe College of Applied Sciences & Arts is home to a wing of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, with cadets from San Jose State and other local universities and community colleges. This ROTC program provides instruction in leadership, management, and national security studies offering all eligible students the opportunity to obtain an officer's commission in the United States Air Force while earning their college degrees. JUSTICE STUDIESFrom its start as a police training school in 1930, Justice Studies remains the oldest degree-granting program in criminal justice in the nation, with bachelors and masters degrees in Justice Studies, and an interdisciplinary bachelors in Forensic Science. Courses address the full range of justice issues so that graduates are well prepared to pursue further education and careers in law, law enforcement, corrections, forensics investigations, justice research and public policy. SOCIAL WORKThe School of Social Work's origins are deeply rooted in a commitment to social justice and active partnerships with the local community. The school recognizes the importance of cultural values and beliefs grounded in a strong community orientation responsive to diverse communities through quality education, research and service. RECREATION & LEISURE STUDIESEstablished in 1944, the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies was the first recreation department in California. Its primary goal is the preparation of culturally diverse, competent, and ethical professionals, able to work with an increasingly diverse population. The curriculum addresses critical societal issues through preparation of students for leadership in public and commercial recreation, domestic and international tourism, and therapeutic recreation in health care settings. HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENTOne of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the world economy today is travel and tourism. Hospitality Management prepares students as future entrepreneurial leaders in hospitality careers at state, national and international levels through a balanced curriculum that incorporates multiculturalfocused academic study and internship experience in hotel and lodging, food and beverage, travel and tourism, and event and convention management. LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCEThe School of Library and Information Science is the largest accredited program in the world, offering a graduate degree fully-accredited by the American Library Association. Graduates find careers in diverse settings including schools, universities, high tech firms, and government agencies such as homeland security. They help individuals and groups access and make effective use of society's recorded information and ideas.
