Service learning and community engagement (SL/CE), i.e. , “community learning” is pedagogy that promotes student learning through active participation in meaningful engagement experiences in the community directly related to course objectives. Through reflective activities, students enhance understanding of course content, general knowledge, self-awareness, civic responsibility and commitment to the community. Community-based, experiential learning is distinguished as a High Impact Practice.

SL/CE addresses a variety of community issues such as direct service to people in need, improvement of community resources, community outreach and education, research, policy analysis, or activism.

SJSU policy and procedures guide SL/CE for effective pedagogy and risk management, and for reporting purposes. Community learning does involve extra effort by faculty, but can benefit students, builds community, enhances public relations, attracts funding. Community learning may be recognized in the RTP process.
