The Bridging Borders AmeriCorps Program is a collaborative national service effort between San José State University, community organizations and public schools to address the needs of immigrant families in Santa Clara County.The purpose and vision of AmeriCorps is to support the educational needs of low-income, limited English Speaking K-8 students through literacy tutoring and in that way help them succeed in the educational system. Bridging Border involves 77 SJSU students and community members in service to immigrant communities in San Jose. The mission of the SJSU AmeriCorps Bridging Borders Project is to support the educational needs of low-income, limited English speaking K-8 students through literacy tutoring support. Additionally, AmeriCorps members recruit, train, and manage community volunteers to help meet the needs of additional students and clients. In teams, members are placed at local public schools and community based organizations to serve as tutors or site leaders. If you serve a term of national service with AmeriCorps Bridging Borders program you will be challenged to respond to the educational needs of the children of immigrants. |
