Community Service & Leadership

There are many ways to serve the community in addition to course-based community learning. You can participate in service leadership programs, team with existing community service projects or volunteer on your own. Find an opportunity that's right for you!
AmeriCorps Bridging Borders
SJSU Center for Community Learning & Leadership hosts an AmeriCorps program. Members serve at a community partner organization and receive training and support throughout the year. Members earn a monthly living stipend and an Education Award. Citizenship or legal permanent residency and one year of college is required for eligibility. AmeriCorps members can serve in three ways:

- Peer Leader for University Service-Learning (PLUS),
- Community Educator, or
- Community-based Tutor.
Project SHINE
Project SHINE links college students with older immigrants and refugees in the San José community who are seeking to learn English, obtain U.S. citizenship and become more engaged in their community. SHINE students commit to serving as a tutor for 20 hours a semester through a community learning class.

One Day Service Projects
One-day service projects are a great way to get involved if your time is limited or if you want to help in a variety of ways. Service projects are a fun and rewarding way to build unity and team spirit in a student group. They are also a great way to meet new people! AmeriCorps
National service program engaging individuals in a year of intensive service in communities throughout the United States. AmeriCorps addresses national issues in the areas of education, public safety, environment and health/human needs. Great leadership and life experience! In exchange for service, AmeriCorps "members" receive a monthly living allowance and money for education.

Since 1964, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) members have dedicated a year of service to the mission of alleviating and eradicating poverty in local communities.
