While the ground around it subsided by approximately 2 feet, this petroleum storage tank was not damaged during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, and there were no leaks due to implementation of improved codes, e.g., improved foundation design and use of flexible piping for connections to tank.

The ground, in the foreground, settled by approximately 2 ft, despite which there was no pipeline failure due to the usage of flexible pipe connections; otherwise, failure at the flange connections could have been expected.
