Guideline for Classroom Implementation for Integrative Learning

Though integrative learning efforts usually occur at the programmatic level, individual faculty members can encourage integrative learning in their own classrooms. Do this by helping students make connections between concepts in your class and trends across multiple classes. Instructors might also connect their own teaching with faculty in other disciplines or even combined with internships, service projects and study abroad.

The AACU groups integrative learning efforts into three areas. Below are ways individual faculty might add integrative learning in their lessons.

Curriculum Development

  • Find a colleague in a different but related discipline and start the process of creating a set of linked courses. Explore team teaching.
  • Help students plan their course plan to include diverse GE courses.
  • Design a capstone project including multiple disciplines and perspectives.
  • Add a service-learning component to your courses to enhance civic engagement.

Faculty Development

  • Use the Peer Mentors in Teaching program to contact faculty in other disciplines and plan a cross-curriculum cooperative exercise.


  • Create rubrics that evaluate students' ability to analyze and synthesize concepts across disciplines and to make connections.
  • Work with your department chair to build integrative learning into program outcomes.
  • Add self-assessment to your class exercise including portfolios and e-portfolios to help students focus on cocurricular connections.
