Preparing for Your First Advisement Appointment

Advising

To prepare for your first advisement appointment, follow all of the directions listed below for the category of student that best describes you.

For students who have only been enrolled at SJSU:

  • Read about Plan A and Plan B and decide which path you will follow to complete your BA. If you cannot decide, make a list of the questions you will need to ask your advisor.
  • Print out a copy of your Academic Advising Report from your MySJSU page. This document will show which requirements you have met and which you need to meet.
  • Print out a copy of the appropriate advisement form for you, either Plan A [PDF] | Plan B [PDF]| and enter the grades for courses that you have taken in the appropriate areas as best you can.
  • Read about the NEW Plan B degree option available starting fall 2014.  See the new advisement form.
  • Sign up for an advisement appointment. Advisement appointments will be available starting the first day of classes each semester. Appointment scheduling is self-serve and sign-up sheets are in SH 201.
  • As soon as you can but at least three business days before your appointment, paperclip your Academic Advising Report (find it in your MYSJSU account, click 'Degree Progress' then select SJSU for 'Institution' and Academic Advising Report for 'Report Type') and your Plan A or B advisement form along with a note indicating the date of your appointment. Give these materials to staff in SH 201 so that your advisor can be prepared for your appointment.
  • Your appointment will be with Dr. Terry O'Donnell-Johnson in SH 216.

For students who are enrolled at SJSU and have taken courses at other colleges and universities:

  • Read about Plan A and Plan B and decide which path you will follow to complete your BA. If you cannot decide, make a list of the questions you will need to ask your advisor.
  • Print out a copy of your Academic Advising Report from your MySJSU page. This document will show which requirements you have met and which you need to meet. Check it carefully to be sure that all your transfer information is on the report.
  • If you find that transfer courses are missing, print out a copy of your transcript from the college(s) where you have taken courses. For department purposes, these do not have to be sealed transcripts.
  • Print out a copy of the appropriate advisement form for you, either Plan A [PDF]or Plan B [PDF]. Fill in the information at the top and enter your grades for the courses that you have taken in the appropriate areas as best you can using information from the Academic Advising Report, your in-progress work at SJSU, and your work at other colleges and universities. If you are not sure which requirements are met by courses you have taken elsewhere, go to the SJSU articulation site to look up course equivalencies.
