Proposed Change in Course Requirements

B.S. - Chemistry, Concentration in Biochemistry

Proposed Change in Course Requirements

The Chemistry Department has proposed changes in the required coursework for the B.S. Chemistry, concentration Biochemistry degree. The proposed changes are currently being reviewed by University authorities. If approved, the new requirements will take effect in fall 2013 and students graduating in fall 2013 or later may choose to follow the course requirements in place when they matriculated OR the new course requirements. Note that the proposed changes are NOT YET APPROVED. A final decision on approval of the changes is expected by May 2013. These proposed changes only affect the B.S. Chemistry, concentration in Biochemistry degree. The B.S. Chemistry degree is unchanged.

We are posting the proposed changes now so that students may take them into consideration in planning their program of study. We STRONGLY advise students to consult their advisor (Prof. d'Alarcao or Prof. Eggers) before making programmatic changes related to this proposal. This is especially true for students who have completed part of the current requirements (such as part of the PHYS 50 series) but now wish to plan for the new requirements.

Summary of Proposed Changes:

  • Mathematics requirement will be MATH 30 and MATH 31 (MATH 32 no longer required)
  • Physics requirement will be PHYS 2A and PHYS 2B (PHYS 50 series no longer required)
  • Physical chemistry requirement will be CHEM 160 (CHEM 161A and CHEM 161B no longer required).
  • Two electives will now be required, and they must be from an approved list of elective courses (see “Chemistry Electives” below).
  • The SJSU Studies Area R General Education learning objectives will now be covered in the major. There will be no need to take an additional course to meet this requirement.
