A Decade of Battery Breakthroughs

Time: Friday, November 1, 3:15-4:15pm

Location: E333

Every year, we hear about at least one battery "breakthrough'' that will change the game in the energy storage space. Typically, hype meets reality and commercialization doesn't quite work out. Nevertheless, these breakthroughs helped shape the battery industry and research space, and are worthwhile to review. In this talk, we will take a technical tour of the big ideas proposed by battery researchers in the last decade including liquid metal batteries, slurry flow batteries and glass electrolytes.

Steve Selverston is a scientist at EEnovate Technology, Inc. He is chemical engineer with seven years of academic and industry experience in electrochemical energy storage. He has worked on more than five different battery types, and has authored several patent applications and peer-reviewed publications on his work. He holds a MS degree in chemical engineering from SJSU (2013) and a PhD in chemical engineering from Case Western Reserve University (2017).
