Accessible Dreams: One Student's Thoughts

My name is Monica Simons, I graduated from San José State University in December 2005 with a degree in Justice Studies. As a former foster youth who was in the system since the age of 6 months until the age of eighteen, I have used my experiences in the system as a source of strength. I am motivated to go above and beyond in every aspect of my life. Over the years I have built strong relationships with adults in the community who have been so helpful and caring. They provide support services, help me find resources, and emotional support. They have become near and dear to my heart and I do not know where I would be without them.

The CME Society program is a way to reach out to foster youth on campus and youth who are aspiring to pursue higher education. The program can become a place where students can find others with similar experiences and older mentors that can help with transitions and everyday situations. I have been fortunate enough to find people in the community who care, I wish that all students do as well. Much Thanks to everyone who is involved in the CME Society for giving youth a sense of home, belonging, and support!
