Winter 2019 Newsletter
The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business has received many accolades in the past year (including a #8 ranking from Money Magazine for best places to get a business degree), in part, because of our efforts to continuously improve the student experience. Our new strategic plan, Lucas 2023, emphasizes our commitment to experiential learning and to boosting the professional skills of our students. Through curricular and co-curricular efforts that focus on project-based learning, industry interaction and soft skill development, we are poised to take the next steps forward as a college.

One example of experiential learning that we are proud of is the SJSU Contemporary Tax Journal, a peer reviewed, student-managed online journal featuring the work of SJSU graduate tax students, as well as original articles from tax practitioners, academics and graduate students. The journal offers our students an avenue for enriching their graduate tax learning by engaging with tax compliance, planning and policy areas through writing, editing and researching.
San Jose State students are gaining valuable hands-on experience with Vonzos Partners, a venture capital firm with a high-contact approach to startup funding and business acceleration. Bahram Parineh, a lecturer in Accounting and Finance, and his students developed the business plan Vonzos uses to attract fund investors. Additionally, Anuradha Basu, professor in the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business and director of the Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship, had students work on an accelerator program pricing analysis. Typically, nine to 14 SJSU students engage with Vonzos each semester.
On Friday, March 8, 2019, the Lucas College of Business will host the 3rd Annual Women in Leadership League Conference. This conference will bring together top women leaders, alumni, and students from all disciplines. The day is planned to provide a mix of keynote addresses and small group discussions, providing participants with inspirational experiences as well as practical advice and strategies from successful women leaders. Hear about their career and life journeys and their personal perspectives on leadership. There will be many opportunities to ask questions and for informal conversations.
On Tuesday, February 5, members of our CFO Alumni Network along with other alumni,
SJSU students and professors packed the Hammer Theatre to hear economists Robert Reich
and Ben Stein in a powerful and entertaining conversation on the future of the U.S.
economy moderated by SJSU President Mary A. Papazian. This event, like last year's
featuring Condoleezza Rice, sold out quickly.
