1. What are the events that BARC sponsors?
  • Fall and Spring Career and Internship Fair and concurrent Fall Executive Board Meeting.

    • Director chairs meeting.
    • Retail Executive Board and College Advisory Board are in attendance.
    • Student Advisory Board assists.
    • Student Advisory Board participates at table for last 45 minutes.
    • Development of long-range strategy.
    • Program development and deployment.
    • Collaboration regarding company internship and executive training programs.
  • BARC Retail Conference, Fall

    • Executive board assists in securing speakers for 1.5 day program of trade-oriented conference.
    • Staged professionally at local hotel (Student Union for pilot).
    • Promoted to trade and academics.
    • Student participation heavily encouraged (interface opportunity between companies and students).
  • Retail Study Tour, Spring

    • 2-day tour of greater Bay Area retailing and retailing-allied industry (1-day for pilot).
    • Visits to various stores, administrative offices, and warehousing and distribution centers of retailers and retail supply chain members to acquaint students with the spectrum of career opportunities in retailing.

2. How are the Student Advisory Board members evaluated?


They will be evaluated at the end of each Fall and Spring Semester. The evaluation will be conducted by the BARC Director in collaboration with the College Advisory Board in terms of the extent to which their interest in retailing is well defined and documented, curricular and extracurricular accomplishments, and contributions to the community. Evaluation will be based the following

  • Transcripts
  • Resume
  • Letter of application
  • A personal interview

Student Advisory Board memberships are renewable for up to eight semesters.

No, the student target audience is not defined by academic discipline; rather, they are defined by:

  • Their interest in learning about the retail industry
  • Their interest in exploring internship and career opportunities in retailing
  • Their potential to make contributions to the retailing profession and their community.

4. How does Retail Executive Advisory Board help in BARC program?


Members of the Retail Executive Advisory Board will consist of representatives of retail and retail-allied companies that are dedicated to helping to provide educational co-curricular opportunities to Student Advisory Board members as well and SJSU students in general.These experiences need not be limited to retailing specifically.They can also related to more generalizable competencies such as problem solving in a volatile environment, the importance of proceeding in an ethical manner, and leadership and team-building skills.
